Patricia Cornwall knows how to keep the pages turning in the Scarpetta series When Scarpetta is faced with the return of her journalist friend, Abby, who is investigating the same puxxling murders of 5 young couples, Scarpetta has to wonder if she is feeding information to someone else. Especially to illustrious Pat Harvey, mother of the last slain girl and "drug czar" of the federal government. Is the FBI withholding vital information from Scarpetta? Is someone inside the CIA commiting these murders? If so, why? And how is her friend, Abby, involved?

When the daughter of powerful Washington politician, National Drug Policy Director, Pat Harvey, and boyfriend turn up missing, the services of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner of Richmond, New Jersey, are called upon once again. Four other couples have disappeared in similar fashion and have eventually been found murdered, all within a fifty-five mile radius of Williamsburg (Virginia). Scarpetta is called to a local rest area where Ms. Harvey's daughter, Deborah's, jeep has been found. When last seen, the couple was headed to the Harvey beach home in said jeep. A new investigation begins. Investigators, powerful politicians, and covert operations agents speculate as to whether or not this case is associated with Harvey's job or is it, perhaps, the fifth in a series of couple murders. As is often the case in Cornwell's stories, it becomes a question of who knows what and what is the real truth behind events and motives.
The murders have been particularly gruesome, and when found, all that remains of the young people are some bones and clothing, along with a jack of hearts playing card. Also, in each case, the victims' shoes and socks cannot be found. Scarpetta and Richmond homicide detective, Pete Marino, follow various leads, spend considerable time speculating on the who and why of the murders, while investigative reporter, Abby Turnbull, seems to be terrified about something (Marino doesn't trust her). Ex-lover, Mark James, makes an appearance and temporarily heats up the personal side of Scarpetta's life again. In the end the killer is found and the murders solved, but at tremendous cost to the Harvey family and to others. An excellent read.

Very good author...keeps you enthralled and on the edge of your seat.
I enjoyed reading this book. From the beginning this was a fast paced never dull read. Twist and turns till the very end.
Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta is a character who becomes addicting. Smart, Funny, brave, and tough she is a character who sticks with you, and you will find yourself wanting to read the whole series. Chapters are on the shorter side so the book is easier to digest.

If you are a fan of "Bones", you will love this book. The Kay Scarpetta series keeps you wanting more of her books. It has action, gruesome murder, amazing deductive reasoning, imminent danger for the key characters. Try this book, you will love it. I have more like this.
I really appreciate books where the main characters are not simply young, gorgeous, and up for sex anytime, anywhere. The Kay Scarpetta books are interesting, tightly woven stories that keep me reading until the last page. This one is no different. Dr. Scarpetta is after a killer who has already murdered four couples, and now he's taken another couple. She has to find him before he kills these last two. To add to the suspense, the young woman whose life is on the line is the daughter of a high-profile political figure. Patricia Cornwell has a proven track record, and this book is a very good read.
I actually don't remember

Big Cornwell fan Good story
If you liked the other Kay Scarpetta books you will enjoy this one too! If you haven't read them before, Cornwell has a great style and pace that keeps you hooked, and Scarpetta is a believable heroine. It's realistic you find yourself immersed right from the start! There is some detail when it comes to death and crime scenes, as the main character is a Chief Medical Examiner, but it's not overly graphic, distasteful, or grisly. I personally love Patricial Cornwell, and this book will not disappoint!

An early entry in the Kay Scarpetta series
Another great Dr. Scarpetta story.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta is on the trail of a serial killer that targets only couples and one of his latest victims comes from an important family, so the good guys really want this killer caught. The killer leaves a Jack of Hearts at each crime scene and steals the victims shoes and socks. And as usual, Kay has to have obstacles, like a persistent reporter who is writing a book about the crimes.
Good but not as good as others in the Scarpetta saga. I enjoyed though
Cornwell continues strong
Cornwell's third Scarpetta book. Much better than the later books when the characters are all angry and unpleasant.
Early in the Marino/Scarpette relationship - Benton is in the story but not yet in the picture for Kay. Gotta read for Scarpetta lovers to hear about early items that realtionships built in later books. Gotta read for any reason!

From School Library Journal
YA-- The decomposed bodies of Fred Cheyney and Deborah Harvey don't show up for months, well into Dr. Kay Scarpetta's account of her investigation into their disappearance. The two lovers are the fifth pair in a string of mysterious ``couple murders,'' all bearing the same characteristics: two young people completely vanish, leaving behind an abandoned car and no clues about their fate. Months later the skeletal remains are found by hunters in remote wooded locales, and no evidence about the causes of death can be discovered. At the same time, the FBI appears to be foiling attempts to discover the identity of the murderer by withholding crime-scene information, and Kay's old friend Abby, a newspaper reporter, complicates matters by conducting her own search for the truth. This rich brew makes for a compelling story to which Cornwell has added such stand-bys from her two previous Scarpetta novels as Pete Marino, a middle-aged police detective, and Benton Wesley, an FBI investigator who knows how to keep a secret. Mystery-loving YAs and fans of Cornwell's previous novels will enjoy her latest.

One of the earliest in the Dr. Kay Scarpetta series - a good beginning that introduces characters who become fully rounded in Cornwell's later books. This book involves the murders of four young couples. In the days before high technology CSI type of forensics, Scarpetta solves this mystery with the aide of a microscope.

"Captivating...What a Ride!! You'll probably stay up all night turning the pages."
The author's story telling is getting a bit better than her first two in the series, although sometimes I really have to wonder if an M.E. has this much excitement in their jobs. I guess I've never thought that they would be doing so much detective work out in the field as Scarpetta does.
Kay is also starting to grow on me and not make me roll my eyes as much as usual with her egoism. If this continues into future books is yet to be seen though.
And, a spoiler alert. I can't believe that after how warped Mrs. Harvey acted throughout the book that no one thought to watch her when the suspect was released on arraignment for the minor charged he had gotten caught for. It was like everyone who came into contact with this grieving, yet crazy, woman was blind. I can't believe no one thought she'd pull a vigilante justice like she did.
Overall, good story, though and looking forward to the next one.

Great Cornwell! Early Scarpetta
Very good. . .it made me want more from Cornwell.
Conditioned by my previous experiences with detective novels whenever I begin a Scarpetta book I expect a straightforward mystery, and every time Cornwell crafts a story that's everything but. Oh, there is a mystery alright, but there is also a very strong human element and the more I get to know Kay Scarpetta and her circle the more clearly I see it. It is possible of course that this human element is becoming more prominent, with every consecutive book being more about the people than the crime, the crime being a catalyst for this humanity to manifest itself and provide a macabre backdrop for it. And you know what? I like seeing something more layered than an cold investigation into disappearances and deaths, I like seeing characters stretch themselves, doubt themselves and their friends and colleagues, struggle through life's problems and emerge changed, even just a little bit. I like seeing relationship develop through the mundane things, and Cornwell delivers that every time. In case you're wondering what it is I'm talking about: here Kay doubts her friendship with Abby Turnbull, the reporter she first met in Postmortem, because Abby isn't being particularly straightforward about her involvement in Scarpetta's latest case. It is also in this book that she realizes that the more she works with Marino the more she likes him, despite his unkempt appearance and irritating behavior, and a true friendship begins to emerge. And last but not least there are the frustrations of finding herself in the middle of basically a face-off between the FBI, the DA's office and higher echelons of government. Cornwell uses these situations wonderfully to develop her characters and since they are so significant in the story they become the stage of power plays and the really dramatic scenes.
Politics is big in this book and Cornwell explores the effects of it on people's lives with her usual delicate but firm touch. The potential of a cover-up in her daughter's murder case pushes a prominent politician over the edge and the question of whether she ruined her own career or was helped along the way is a major point of contention in this book. There is also the matter of whether being a public figure at a time like what this politician's family is going through is a blessing or a curse and the reality that there is more than one answer to this question. The fact that Cornwell raises these issues and that everything filters through Kay, the protagonist, makes her a complex individual who navigates a personal and professional maze every day and knows that things are much less straightforward than she would like them to be, a person who regularly thinks about life and people, and not just on a simple day-to-day level.
My only concern with this novel is that if Cornwell continues along the path she is on the politics will grow to dominate the story and while it is a fertile field for character development I would hate to see it happen - politics tend to make things convoluted and much talk about views and positions on issues is not something I enjoy in my fiction. I think she struck a nice balance in this book and hope the next novels don't veer off into a lot of talk and little action.

As always a book by Cornwell good to last page.

Another great book by Cornwell
Patricia Cornwell is a great author... or so I've been told. I have read several of her books and I just don't think they are that great. However, Many other people like her and she's selling more books than I am, so I don't feel I have room to complain.

"Gruesome Detail, but Still a Five Star Thriller"
"Dr. Kay Scarpetta is on the trail of a serial killer that targets only couples and one of his latest victims comes from an important family, so the good guys really want this killer caught. The killer leaves a Jack of Hearts at each crime scene and steals the victims shoes and socks. And as usual, Kay has to have obstacles, like a persistent reporter who is writing a book about the crimes."
