This is excellent classic sci-fi. It is the story of astronauts in the not too distant future rendezvousing with a mysterious cylindrical "spacecraft" dubbed "Rama" that had entered our solar system. The astronauts investigate the craft, discover how to enter it, and ... I won't spoil the rest. You'll have to read it yourself to find out what happens. Good stuff!

I love Arther C. Clarke. This is the starting point for the RAMA books he wrote with Gentry Lee. A good space mystery with a lot of "heady" sci-fi notions about alien encounters. Not a bad first book recommendation for someone who has never read Clarke's stuff.

Awesome (in the original sense of the word) encounter with the relics of a space-faring race, in a not-too-distant future. Realistic portrayal of how humans might react to a superior technology, and how that technology might react to them. Exciting and mysterious.

My personal favorite Clarke. Exciting, intriguing, detailed, adventuresome. A different twist for SF: we don't meet the aliens but rather explore their technology.

Pretty good book, Childhoods End and Rendezvous with Rama I felt was better.

From my Arthur C. Clarke period of book reading. A decent read.

An unknown alien probe is found orbiting the sky and humans have settled Mercury, Luna, Mars, some asteroids, and some Jovian and Saturnian moons. Each group sends an Ambassador to the United Planets, which meets on Earth's moon, to discue more about the probe and who to send to open and go intio the probe.

A bit long winded but it was a good read.
