It got tiring after a while, all the bad things that kept happening. And that's just in book two. Imagine 11 more books like it.

Another good installment in the Series of Unfortunate Events. There are some shockingly violent references, so maybe not for grade school kids, but well written and an interesting story.

Wonderful series. It may be more appropriate for older children (middle school age) and young adults than for elementary school age children, as it is rather a dark series. I found it quite humorous.
My granddaughter is into this series and loved this book. In fact, she keeps coming back to it. The story line, for me, is depressing but she just giggles and laughs through it. I am a little put off by the story line, but I could get used to it and think this is a very good set of books to show readers how it really can be worse for the other guy in life.

Loved the book. Used it in my classroom for book clubs for both 4th graders and 6th graders and both age groups really enjoyed the book. Especially the boys!!!!!
I loved all of the books in this series. Much much better than the movies. This one is one of my favorite of them.

This book is my favorite (so far) of the Series of Unfortunate Events. It is a whodunit in which the Baudelaire orphans must solve a murder mystery in order to convince the clueless adults Count Olaf is up to no good.
I really loved the character of Uncle Monty and was saddened by his fate. What imaginative child wouldn't love living with a cheerful uncle in a house filled with books and reptiles?

This book is fun. It's kind of like the 'BOXCAR CHILDREN' dropped into the Twilight Zone. It has interesting characters and helps build vocabulary in a unusual way. There is a mystery that builds throughout the series.
Book 2 in the series. Loved by kids of all ages.

Publisher's Note
Dear Reader,
If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale. I'm afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery.
In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the reappearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again.
I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter.
With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket
Synopsis
Having escaped from the evil Count Olaf--for the moment--in BAD BEGINNING, the Baudelaire orphans settle in with their new guardian, Uncle Monty, a kindly snake specialist. Unfortunately, these deeply luckless children have not heard the last from Count Olaf, who returns, horrifyingly, in the guise of Uncle Monty's new assistant. Instead of an astounding trip to Peru with their wonderful uncle, the Baudelaires must contend with the evil count's most nefarious schemes yet. This is the second in the bestselling 13-book series.
