Nice and sappy. A good light read. Although I didn't care for the kidspeak (there's a nearly autistic kid character and Sparks writes what the kid says and then again HOW he says it... like in the kids' language... that was annoying).

The book was amazing. I would say one of the best Nicholas Sparks has ever written.. it is so sweet. About love, remembering and forgetting, and a terrible pain that turned bittersweet. I love this book, it had sort of a creepy setting, but I love how Nicholas Sparks makes it work out. I would most definitely reccomend reading it. Even if you are not a Nicholas Sparks or a romance fan, it was a very touching book.

A romantic page-turner. Volunteer fireman is used to taking heroic risks to save lives. However he can't bring himself to fall in love. Then, he meets a mother in a car crash and finds himself helping her look for her missing son.

A book full of love, loss and small-town life. Good read.

It's hard to understand how Sparks wraps you up and reels you into the story with each book as so many of his stories closely resemble each other. But I guess that's his talent as again and again, he turns out page turners that you don't put down until you finish. This one is no exception; a good story with likable characters with all their human fallacies.

This is an extremely touching novel, and hits very close to home for Sparks as the struggles in this book mimic those which he experienced with one of his own sons. The plot moves a bit slowly, but draws you in with the compassion we as people feel for those in need. Sparks' fans won't be disappointed.

I loved this book! It is one of the best Sparks books out there to read! I got pulled in from the first chapter.... So much so that I couldnt put it down to go to sleep until I found out what happened. This book really touched my heart because my better half is a firefighter (which is what the main character is). This book by Nicholas Sparks held my interest all the way through to the end. However, I found it difficult to comprehend that as a teacher, Denise Holton does not know about speech therapy for young children, and instead of taking advantage of what is available to assist her child, ties her young child to a chair in order to get him to learn to speak.

Quick review from the back cover:

This book is about a man, Taylor McAden, who can't seem to fall in love. He likes to help and save troubled women, but then leaves them as soon as they want more from him. When single mother, Denise Holton comes into the picture, which involves a car accident, and a missing son, Taylor has to revisit pain from his past, and hopefully over come it, to find true love.

I'll start off by saying I am a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks. That being said this book has become my personal favorite (it's a tie between this book and "The Notebook"). Not only was this a profound story of love and loss, but the author drew on his own life experience to write this extraordinary story. Which makes it all the more touching and beautiful. I would recomend this book to any fan of Nicholas Sparks, all mothers, and anyone who has ever experienced the joys and tragedies of life.

Nicholas Sparks never disappoints. This is a fantastic read, I finished it in 2 days. At first I was apprehensive since it starts out with the character Denise traveling by car with her young son through a storm. Denise has a horrific wreck and she cannot find her son. Being a mom of a toddler it hit me and I didn't think I'd finish the book. I continued on and was rewarded with a great book.

I havde read almost all of Nicholas sparks books. This one in one of my favorites.
This story is about a man who always helps every one is his path, he feels it is his calling to help every one in need, to the point of forgetting his own needs. He is afraid of commitment, until he meets Denise, who he helps, but falls in love with. Denise has a boy with a talking disability, and he befriends this child. when he starts to move on, he feels he is not worthy of his own happiness.
This book is very tender. you will love it. Sandra Fox

This was a typical Nicholas Sparks novel. The author takes one ordinary guy and pairs him with an exceptionally beautiful woman. I thought the main characters were charming although they didn't always make the best decisions. The book, despite having a Sparks-typical plotline, became intriguing and finally caught my interest halfway through (I almost put the book down to read something fun). Don't be surprised if Sparks' story brings a tear to your eye.

I was pulled into this book right away with the idea of a lost child, but the story slows down within the first few chapters. At least it did for me. Once I got almost halfway, I was bored with the story and lost interest soon after. I never did finish this one. It probably ends the way I think it did, but I never will find out because I don't want to finish reading it.

A man who likes to rescue troubled women, he inevitably leaves them as soon as they want more from him.

Nicholas Sparks's latest tale of romantic angst, The Rescue, has all of his trademark elements: characters who are part of the walking wounded, the fresh hope of new love, and the crushing force of unexpected tragedy. But this time out, Sparks opts for a happier ending, though not before wringing as many tears from his readers as he can.

Nice easy read. If you like sweet love stories, you'll love this book (from the same author that wrote The Notebook).

When confronted by raging fires or deadly accidents, volunteer fireman, Taylor McAden feels compelled to take terrifying risks- risks no one else in the department would ever take- to save lives. But there is one leap of faith Taylor can't bring himself to make: He cant fall in love. For all his adult years, Taylor has sought out women who need to be rescued, women he leaves a s soon as their crisis is over, as soon as the relationship starts to become truly intimate.
Then, one day, a raging record-breaking storm hits his small Southern town, Denise Holton, a young single mother, is driving through it when her car skids off the road. With her is her four-year-old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed everything. Unconscious and bleeding, she- but not Kyle- will be found by Taylor McAden. And when she wakes, the chilling truth becomes clear to both of them: Kyle is gone.
During the search for Kyle, the connection, the lifeline, between Taylor and Denise takes root. Taylor doesn't know that this rescue will be different from all the others, demanding far more than raw physical courage. That it will lead him to the possibility of his own rescue from a life lived without love. That it will require him to live life to the fullest by daring to love.
In The Rescue, Nicholas Sparks weaves his inimitable spell, immersing us in the passions and the surprising complexities of modern relationships- and in doing so, teaching us something about our own.

Secret traumas again haunt Sparks's characters, in the author's fourth novel (after The Notebook; Message in a Bottle; A Walk to Remember). Denise Holden, the 29-year-old heroine, is destitute and forced to live in her mother's old house in Edenton, N.C. She's also the single mother of a handicapped child, Kyle, a four-year-old with "auditory processing problems" that render him unable to express himself or to fully understand others. Though she doesn't suspect it, Denise is on a literal collision course with true love. After she smashes her car into a tree and wakes up to discover Kyle missing, she finds deliverance in the form of Taylor McAden, dashing firefighter and compulsive risk taker, who rescues Kyle, too. Since Taylor enjoys an instant, unprecedented rapport with Kyle, there is little standing in the way of burgeoning romance. Trouble comes, however, when Denise learns of Taylor's checkered romantic past. Taylor's inability to commit, it seems, is somehow tied to his compulsive heroism, of which numerous histrionic examples are described. Denise's quest to find the source of Taylor's emotional distance takes up the final third of the book. The story here is mostly a pretext for the emotional assault that Sparks delivers, but when he manages to link affect to action, the result is cunningly crafted melodrama. These occasions are rare, though; more often Sparks gets bogged down in interminable interior monologue. Because these characters are preordained lovers, their feelings prescribed by fiction conventions, their psychology amounts to little more than a profusion of banality. Yet Sparks's narrative acquires immediacy when his characters' exaggerated emotions compel immoderate actions, and his readers will surely delight at these moments of heightened expressiveness.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy Nicholas Sparks' books; but maybe I've just read too many too closely together. Predictable. Young single mother whose child has a learning/speach problem is rescued from a car crash by Taylor. They fall in love and then he pulls back from the relationship. His best friend is killed in a fire, as was his father, and he is forced to face and accept the reason for his distance from everyone. Happy ending. Again, a good book but I think I'll take a break from Sparks for a while.

I used to be a huge Nicholas Sparks fan and IMHO this was his last great book (I have not read anything after At First Sight and do not ever intend to). The book is typical Nicholas Sparks fare (which should tell you everything about the plot) but with two of his more interesting characters in Taylor McAden and Denise Holton. This book came out in 2000 before Sparks developed a huge overestimation of his talents and said he was a better writer than Cornac McCarthy. I just hope this never gets made into a film so it will not join the list of film disasters based his books.

This started off slow and I was tempted to stop and read something else. But I kept going and it finally caught my attention and I finished. It wasn't one of Sparks best but it was an ok read.

This novel exemplifies what makes a good Nicholas Sparks. If you like or think you may like Sparks, read this one.

From the front flap:

When confronted by raging fires or deadly accidents, volunteer fireman Taylor McAden feels compelled to take terrifying risks--risks no one else in the department would ever take--to save lives. But there is one leap of faith Taylor can't bring himself to make: He can't fall in love. For all his adult years, Taylor has sought out women who needed to be rescued, women he leaves as soon as their crisis is over, as soon as the relationship starts to become truly intimate.

Then, one day, a raging, record-breaking storm his his small Southern town. Denise Holton, a young single mother, is driving through it when her car skids off the road. With her is her four-year-old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed evertying. unconscious and bleeding, she--but not Kyle--will be found by Taylor McAden.

That it will require him to open doors to his past that were slammed shut by pain. That it will dare him to live life to the fullest by daring to love.
