A great travel book about a single older woman, who finds out how to redicover the woman she once was and the woman she was to be, on a trip in Europe alone. I really enjoyed this book. Fun,insightful and a quick read.

Memoir of a NY Times Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who spends a year in Europe. The author, a divorced mother of two grown sons tries to break away from her satisfying but too comfortable lifestyle. Friendships, adventures, romance and mishaps ensue.

This is one of my favorite travel writing books. Steinbach really takes the reader into her stories, and makes you feel as though you're there with her. I especially love the unique way in which she recorded memories by sending herself postcards. This one's on my keeper shelf! The sequel, Educating Alice, was good as well, but didn't keep me as captivated as Without Reservation.

This book was not bad. It reminded me a bit of Eat, Pray, Love. This author was not quite so painfully self-involved and this didn't annoy me as much as Eat, Pray, Love. But there just seemed to be something missing for me. For one thing, this reminds me of many autobiographies I've read where the author somehow thinks you want to know every detail of what she wore each day. What is up with that? But it was a quick read, sort of enjoyable, and if you've been to especially Paris, you might enjoy reading about the things that struck her.

I read Eat, Pray, Love a few years ago and fell in love with it, and have been searching for its equal ever since finishing the last page. Without Reservations is not its equal - for me, this book focused too much on the author's past and family, and ends up reading more like a memoir than a documentary of adventures and travel. I had a difficult time connecting with the author, possibly because we are at very different stages of life. Also, she waffles between viewpoints so often it's almost mind-numbing; in one sentence she mentions how great it is to be an independent woman not attached to a man, while in the next she's overwhelmingly infatuated with her newest lover. All that said, it does have its moments, and her descriptions of the cities and places she visits are beautiful.

I loved this. I loved the in depth detail of the places she visits. She is so good with this that you feel like, at times, you are walking the streets of Paris with her.
I became completely envious of her trip and am VERY inspired to take my own trip...just like Alice.

Love this book so much I kept it. And will not share for fear of it not being returned. Alice reminded me so much of my mother in her love of travel. She tells us of her adventures in comfortable language, shares her fears and glories. I envied her experiences with so many interesting people. It's a fabulous work!
