This is Anne McCaffrey's first published novel. Despite having been originally published decades ago, the story is only slightly dated. I think it shows how far ahead of her time she was when it came to depicting strong women in Science Fiction. The heroine and hero have attitudes that would not be out of place in a current SF book.
This book has a bit of everything in it, alien abduction, political intrigue, battles against horrific aliens, and a romance. The heroine is an earth woman who somehow finds herself on an alien planet. She slowly returns to a normal mental state to find herself in some sort of mental institution, not as a patient, but as a worker! She soon realizes that the man she is caring for is being drugged against his will and decides to save him. From that point on she becomes entangled in the political intrigues of the planet she is on and will come to play a pivotal role in the salvation of the planet, both from dangers within and from space!

This book is from very early in McCaffrey's career and does show her lack of experience in dealing with the strange and wonderful topics. That being said, it is the first book I know of to touch on the topic of an alien species 'stealing' people to incorporate them into their (the aliens') own subculture. Very detailed and fanciful, as all of McCaffrey's books are. A taste of the writer McCaffrey was to become!

Originally published this 1967, this copy is a 1986 edition. It has been reissued since then. An early science fiction romance of the time travel sub genre. Interesting because it is an example of Anne McCaffrey's writing and showcases her worldbuilding skills that would bloom with "The Ship Who Sang" and the dragonrider series. An enjoyable story.

Anne's first book, an interesting SF/Romance mix. The main character, Sara, is typical of McCaffrey's books, strong female leads!

This is one of my all time favorite books. I don't know how many times I have read it. I admit that the way she learned the language was rather unbelievable for me as a language major, but hey, it's science fiction where we can have faster than light space ship drives.
