a great owen archer mystery. candance robb has created a caring, wonderful and good medieval man. the pestilence has come to york in the year 1369 and owen's apothecary wife, lucie besieged with physicks. but besides the pestilence there are thefts of rare treasures from st leonard's hospital as well as untimely deaths of aging patients. owen has to solve the mysteries of the thefts and deaths besides dealing with a brutal robbery,a fatal fire,a lay sister some still refer to as a whore and a homeless urchin who defends with shooting arrows as well as owen. i truly enjoyed this book in the series and can't wait to read another of owen archer. candance robb is s great mystery writer and a favorite of mine.

The bubonic plague strikes yet again and everyone is worried about the smell of death and other malodorous odors. Yet other people are dying due to other causes, such as murder.

Owen Archer has sent his children away, his wife is scared for them due to the death of a previous child from the plague and he is called on to investigate the murders when he should be comforting her.

While not as tense or deeply mysterious as previous stories in this series, it still pulls you in.

owen archer,spy,apprentice appothacary,husband father.
in this book 5 of so far 10, you learn about the midival version of HMO.
this is something of history I had not known, people with money, property
little or no family can purchase a corrody which allows them to enter the hospital
and eventually there version of nursing home/board and care when the time came.
the trick was to charge enough to cover the patient and wife and still make a profit.
this was a common way to do things back in the day [1369]. oh and the black plague
was making the rounds. lucy was busy selling what people wanted to protect them.
people thought noxious vapors were the cause of it. and to make it fun there is a
killer going around, a human type person.
