Two former DC cops, one black and one white, find themselves collaborating to clear the reputation of another black cop who was shot in mysterious circumstances. Gritty, slangy, unflinching about the drug and prostitution trades and the racial tensions on the streets of our nation's capital.
Whenever you come upon a new author it takes a bit of time to get into his rhythm of writing. This is definitely a new author for me and the story-line is exceptional, the characters compelling and the plot tight. I'll be looking for more from Pelecanos.
This book begins a series involving P.I. Derek Strange and a maybe wannabe P.I., Terry Quinn. Set in Washington D.C., the scene setting is detailed, the dialogue exact and the story right on in a gritty, tell-it-like-it-is manner.
george pellacanos rights some of the best character driven stories in the mystery/crime genre. this is in the crime category.

First time I've read this author. Excellent mystery. I enjoyed the characters and the realistic descriptions of the environments that exist in many parts of the country today.
Using DC as the background, the author explores a dangerous landscape of drugs and danger, loyalty and love. Two former cops, Derek Strange, black and Terry Quinn, white, are pursuing the investigation of a police shooting. But in a city that lives within the shadows of a nation's dreams, neither Strange or Quinn can forsee the dirty little war that will break out around them. No one writes urban crime novels as well as Pelecanos.

I really enjoyed this hardboiled crime novel which takes place in the Washington D.C. area. It's a little graphic and gritty in places, but a very good read.
