Really well written account of the first European exploration of the Amazon River, which was actually unintentional and quite harrowing. If this was fiction, the plot twists would be hard to swallow.

I loved this book. Had read where until recently no one believed Orellana about there being 300 straight miles along the Amazon where they couldn't put ashore because of hostile villages. And now that has been proven true. After reading this, I went on to "River of Doubt" about Roosevelt in the Amazon in 1914ish, and it was really good. Then read a novel about modern Amazon, "State of Wonder" and it just finished out the trio.
