I have three words to say if you are a mystery fan. READ THIS BOOK. It is excellent! John Madden is carrying scars, both physical and psychological, from his years as a soldier in the trenches during World War One and he is trying to find his way back into the world. He is a shrewd and observant man as well as an excellent "copper". The story is shocking and the twists and turns keep the pages turning. This is the first of three books featuring John Madden and I plan to read them all. Soon.
