A Heart Tormented-Erienne's father had given her hand to the richest suitor. She was now Lady Saxton, mistress to a great manor all but ruined by fire, wife to a man whose mysteriously shrouded form aroused fear and pity. Yet even as she fell in love with her adoring husband, Erienne despaired of freeing her heart from the dashingly handsome Yankee who couldn't forget her. The beautiful Erienne, once filled with young dreams of romance, was now a wife and woman...torn between the two men she loved.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I think it's the most romantic, too. The character Christopher has stayed in my heart since 1983. That's how good this book is. I recommend it to anybody. It's a beautiful love story. I heard the writer, Kathleen Woodiwiss, has passed away. That's so sad. She was one of the best romance book writers of all time.

I first read this book in 1983. I reread it every single year. Kathleen Woodiwiss is the queen of classic historical romance.

one of my favorites by kathleen e woodiwiss, this is a story about a man who wants to be married to this woman so much that he transforms his handsome self into a twisted scar covered man who must wear a mask. but in order to suduce her he introduces him self as the masked mans cousin also as his handsome self. it sounds more confusing than it is, but it will keep you interested. she falls for both mans which is good they end up being one and the same of course.

Helpful Score: 1
A good romance novel.
This novel was one of Woodiwiss' best! I enjoyed all of the characters she wrote and appreciated the depth that she gave to them all, even secondary and tertiary characters. One minor issue was that the novel was a tad too long.
One of my all-time favorite books!
This is a tale of the Beauty and the Beast.
The Beauty: Erienne Fleming, the enchanting, raven-haired daughter of the village mayor. She is surounded by suitors, any one of whom would pay
The Beast:Lord Saxton who has purchased her--a mysterious, tragic figure who wears a mask and a cloak at all times to hide disfiguring scars gained in a terrible fire some years back.
The other man, or is he the dashing and witty young Yankee, Christopher Seton
But marriage for love is not to be, for her irresponsible and unscrupulous father, is intent on auctioning off his beautiful daughter to the highest bidder.
She grows to care for the beast the man who bought her.
Violence/Rape/Sex
It's a great story any way

A good traditional historical romp with mistaken identities, brigands, and lords and ladies.
Pure fantasy, but well written and fairly accurate historically. The characters have strong moral fiber, and the good guys win. A nice break from the real world.
I am not a reader of romance novels but I read this book one summer when I was bored and I loved it. It is well written, flows nicely and has characters that you can fall in love with. The story line is intriguing and changes with bounds and leaps. This book is full of suprises. It is one of my all time favorite books and I read alot of books.
Kathleen Woodiwiss at her best!
I absolutely love this book. The storyline captures you immediately and carries you away to another time and place. My favorite Kathleen Woodiwiss book is "Shanna" but this is a close second. Perfection on a page.
A Rose in Winter is a version of Beauty and the Beast. Erienne is forced into marriage due to her father's gambling debts. The man he owes the money to is Christopher Seton who has fallen for Erienne. Erienne's father will not allow the courtship and ends up "selling" her to the highest bidder. Christopher is banned from the bidding but places bids under his titled name of Lord Saxton. Lord Saxton is said to have been burned in a fire that destroyed his family home. Whenever he appears in public it is with a leather mask, cloak, a limp and leather gloves. Erienne eventually falls for him but still has feelings for Christopher.
The story and plot of this book was new to me, and I very much enjoyed it, although halfway through the book I had figured out the mystery of it. Once the outcome was revealed, I was bored however, with 100 pages left to read. I had a hard time holding my interest from then on and found myself skimming often.
one of my all time favs!! I've read it about a million times!!
This was a re-read for me. It was a bit too long and there were some quibbles I have with the story and characters but it was above average.

The author of Shanna and Ashes in the Wind brings to life the England of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Erienne Fleming despairs for her future. Her father is awash in gambling debts and plans to marry her off to a wealthy suitor. But, Erienne has other ideas.
To save her father form financial ruin, beautiful Erienne Flemming is wed against her wishes - auctioning her love to the highest bidder, the enigmatic Lord Saxton... whose long, flowing robes mask a mystery, a vengeful heart, and strange, secret passions.
Northern England 1792, a father auctions his beautiful daughter off to the highest bidder. He is a man who must wear a mask and walks with a limp, but something draws her to him and she falls in love. However, there is another man who is trying to tempt her and although he should be her enemy, after shooting her brother in a duel, she finds him very compelling. So as she struggles with her inappropriate feelings for a man who is not her husband, they must find out who is trying to kill him.
Erienne is the long-suffering daughter of a man low enough to auction her off to the highest bidder to pay off his debts. A plot that keeps you guessing and yet romantic at its core. A wonderful heartwarming read when all is said and done.
I just love Woodiwiss's books! I can honestly say reading her romance novels in my late teens got me hooked on reading. "A Rose in Winter" was one of my favorites.
