I really like Georgette Heyer but this book was very tedious and I had trouble staying with it.
The story of a charming young monarch, the brave subjects who saved him, and the woman he would never forget. Exciting, and probably close to the truth...
The incredible adventures of Charles II, who as a youth cheated death at Cromwell's hands by posing as the servant of a lovely country girl. Historical novel.
From the back of the book:
AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE The King took Jane's hand. "So you are to leave me. he said. Her heart ached dully. "Why, yes, sir. My part is played." Only a week ago, she mused, he had become an ordinary man, and together they had outridden the shadow of death. But now he was the King again, and she was neither a princess whom he could marry, nor a trollop whom he would bed. Yet the memory of this, the greatest adventure of her life, would be with her always ... Tears hung upon her lashes, but at his voice she smiled. For he had said, "We shall meet again."
