This is a fun book with an unbelievable premise. However, MaryJanice Davidson pulls it off. It has interesting and uncommon characters. I am looking forward to the other books in the Royal series.

This book is the first in the series.

Live in Alaska myself, so this was a unique take on the whole idea of Alaska standing alone as its own country. I love the book -- was hilarious!!

What if Alaska hadn't become the 49th State? And what if, unnder the direction of a man named Kaarl Baranov, the residents of Alaska got tired of the law that forbade Russians from settling permanent in the snowy wilderness and performed a nearly bloodless coup? And what if said Baranov took control of Alaska , set it up as a monarchy, and became its first king?

This is the historical back-drop for MaryJanice Davidson's THE ROYAL TREATMENT, and it's only the beginning. The royal family--including father King Alexander II, oldest son Prince David, oldest daughter Princess Alexandria, middle son Prince Alexander, youngest daughter Princess Kathryn, and youngest son Prince Nicholas--reside in the Sitka Palace and are unlike any bunch of stiff-necked royals you've ever met.

The King, who takes delight in attempting to fool the commoners into thinking he's an average fisherman on a weekly basis, is a wise-cracking, tender-hearted, potty-mouth ruler with a heart of gold. And for the last few months, his goal has been to find nearly thirty-year-old son Prince David a wife. King "Al" believes he's found the perfect wife for his son--Christina "the 'e' is silent" Krabbe. Fired from her job on a cruise ship while at port in Alaska , Christina has no money, no family, and nowhere to go, until King Al in disguise invites her to get in touch with one Edmund Dante, who turns out to be the King's adviser.

What follows is a hilarious romp through family loyalty, lust, and the life and loves of a royal family. As Christina and David head toward an history-making wedding, the two of them learn that love and laughter are as necessary as ruling a nation.

With MaryJanice Davidson's trademark wit and witticisms, THE ROYAL TREATMENT is a delight that you're sure to enjoy.

This might be my favorite MJD book. I really really liked this story, I thought it was funny and quirky and I liked the idea of Alaska being it's own country.

The Royal Treatment is fun, quirky, and extremely shallow. We don't get to know any of the characters; only watch them go through the actions of preparing a royal wedding. We are supposed to believe that Prince David is a stiff, proper prince. We don't see him that often, but when he appears there is plenty of that gratuitous sex that Davidson is famous for.

The entire storyline is more than a little unbelievable, with appearances from real life royalty (Liz - as in Queen Elizabeth) and a couple of celebrities (Suzanne Somers, really?)

Though it is relatively short at 314 pages, I couldn't read this story in a single sitting. I found the ending to be predictable and the ends were tied up a little too neatly.

This wasn't as good as one of the Betsy books, but I still enjoyed the story regardless. Sometimes I did have to roll my eyes because the author can't have a lead female who's not a sarcastic snit who's "to big for her britches" (gets old on occassion). It's a fast read, since the print is fairly big and there's a lot of those blank between-the-chapter pages. It's silliness and humor is great for fans of the author.

Hysterically funny read! If youre looking for The Thornbirds or The Tudors dont stop here. This is a book for those of us who worship at the altar of snarky dialogue. And for those who love a heroine so far south of Cinderella that she wouldnt have gone to the ball unless she was really bored or wanted to check out the appetizers. And a hero whos perfectly OK with marrying whoever Dad picked out and doing his best to produce an heir when hes not busy with his studies on penguins, of course. Is he surprised when she says no

Why wont you marry me? he blurted, then smacked himself on the forehead.

Whoa! Easy on the self-flagellation, there, dude.

Im supposed to woo you, he explained.

Well, dont waste the woo on me. Not that its not a really nice offer. Because it is!

So. Why wont you?

Because, frankly, being queen sounds like a gigantic pain in the ass.

I offer you a country and you tell me its a pain in the ass?

The basic setup is Alaska was never bought by the US so it seceded and set up its own monarchy. Now several generations later the royal family continues to be made up of intelligent but eccentric characters: such as the King who sneaks off to go fishing in disguise and Crown Prince David who knows that that hell be king one day but is far more interested in using his Marine Biology degree studying penguins. Enter Christina, newly fired from a cruise ship where she was a cook for objecting to the head chefs advances. She is a no-nonsense American with down-to-earth values who the King meets and decides shell be just PERFECT for David. As the first step he talks her into visiting them at the Sitka Palace

Cut to parts 2 & 3 preparations and the royal wedding

Christinas comment: Getting marrieds probably not so bad. Its all the screwing around beforehand that gives you a migraine.

On the way to the wedding, Christina proceeds to run roughshod over dress designers, protocol officers, catering staff, wedding planners, and various wedding traditions to finally achieve a royal wedding without frou-frou, a wedding dress she could breathe in, shoes she could walk in, and a Crisco-free wedding cake.

And lastly, part 4 if this was Cinderella it would be fade to black behind the And they lived happily ever after voiceover. But it isnt and things happen and the action gets intense

Again, this is a funny book. In fact, its a very funny book. Fun characters, intriguing setting and a plot that moves right along. Enjoy!

I liked the concept of this book when I read its description. And after reading the reviews, thought this was sure to be a light, fun, romantic read. Well, it unfortunately did not live up to expectations. I am no prude when it comes to bad language, and I certainly can have an attitude myself at times, but the main character is so horrible. She is beyond rude, loud-mouthed, and annoying. I am all for the "tough girl" heroines, but this character did not cut it. She was not likeable at all and I could have cared less what happened to her. This is my first Mary Janice Davidson book, and I will not be trying any others. There are hundreds of better things to do with my time. I'm not usually so harsh with reviews, but I can't help this. I have to be honest.

It is truly different from anything else I've ever read.

In a world nearly identical to ours, the North won the Civil War, Ben Afflect is the sexiest man alive, and Russia never sold Alaska to the U.S. Instead, Alaska is a rough, beautiful country ruled by a famously eccentric royal family, and urgently in need of a bride for the Crown Prince. But they have no idea what they're in for when they offer the job to a fiesty commoner...a girl who's going to need...

The Royal Treatment
The Princess-To-Be Primer, Or Things I've Learned Really Wuick, As Compiled by Her Future Royal Highness-Yeah, Whatever-Christine. That's me.

1. Telling jokes you picked up from the guys on the fishing boats doesn't go over really well at a fancy ball.
2. Must learn to curtsy, stifle burps, and tell the difference between a salad fork and a fruit knife.
3. Must not keep thinking about Prince David's amazing eyes, lips, hands, shoulders, uh...wait, can I start over?
4. Becoming a proncess is a lot harder than it looks.
5. Falling in love is a whole lot easier...

In this dazzling, delightfully wacky tale from Mary Janice Davidson, a tough commmoner and a royal prince are about to discover that who they truly are...and what they desperately desire...may be closer than they ever dreamed...

The modern king of Alaska (don't ask) meets a sassy blonde and decides she will be the perfect wife for his son. Everybody more or less goes along with this and it becomes kind of a weird alternate-universe (see Alaska, above) 'Princess Diaries' with Ron Perelman in the Julie Andrews role and the baboon from 'Lion King' in the Hector Elizondo part.

Overall, it's a funny, sexy read, though I probably won't go back for the other two "Alaskan Royal Family" books by this author.
