This book is required reading for all lesbians. Rita Mae is a fabulous author and I dearly loved this book.

Brilliantly written, hilariously funny yet tragic at times. A super read!

This book is what I like to call "extreme fiction", meaning it's highly unrealistic in its story and characters. I usually stop reading this type of fiction once I realize what it is but this novel was amusing and entertaining. I actually laughed out loud a few times. However, I have a few criticisms. The dialogue between characters is not the way anyone anywhere talks to each other, regardless of age or time period. The narrator contradicts her own statements by her actions and seems to lack emotion in situations that would be crushing. The ease with which the narrator meets all these lesbians seems to be way too far-fetched for the time period (50s/60s). Lastly, I didn't really have a that great a sense of Molly's personality, she seemed sweet at times and downright mean at others. She was supposedly a genius but didn't make genius choices. But overall, enjoyable book.

The protagonist has a courageous spirit despite personal obstacles stemmming from birth, socioeconomics, and sexual orientation. Empowering book for females.

Probably the BEST book I've ever read. You won't be able to put this down. If you've ever felt like you didn't belong, this is something you will like. A wonderful story!

Classic lesbian fiction by one of the outstanding authors of that genre. It's great fun to watch the heroine, Molly Bolt, swim against the tide. She doesn't allow herself to be swept away or under the rug, and she does make headway. Bawdy and humorous, Brown's book gives us believable characters and a protagonist worth rooting for. Yay Molly and thanks Rita Mae.

Love this one. It has been part of my collection for many years but I have decided to set it free.

This is an excellent "coming-out" book. It has great character development, great humor, and is sensitive and honest in examining an unspoken diversity in a coming of age girl.

This book brought to the forefront the story of growing up lesbian in America. Molly Bolt, adopted and raised by a poor Southern couple, spends her childhood in discovery of her sexual self and then blowing apart the accepted norms of sexuality. A good read.
Quite an interesting book. I really did enjoy it and I have already recommended it to a co-worker who I know will enjoy it even more than I did.

I really enjoyed this book, until the last third when the heroine came to NYC. Then the dialogue became unrealistic and the protagonist became just plain whiny.

Excellent coming of age story about a rural southern girl discovering her sexuality and herself.

This was a very, very good book! I was able to read it in two sittings, but not because it was short; it was very hard to put down! It was somewhat unrealistic at times, but a wonderful book all the same.
I was very impressed with this novel. It was a wonderful and inspiring story that makes you grow attached to the main character and saddens you when the book ends. A fun, fast read.
Bittersweet growing-up and coming-out story of poor white girl in Florida who is smarter than most people, and, luckily, most determined of all. Fighting barriers of class and gender (even before anyone knows she's lesbian) gutsy character Molly Bolt Survives on the street and excels in everything she does. But the world still wants her as a secretary or a sextoy. This now-classic 1973 gem was just the start of a long and terrific writing career for Rita Mae Brown that continues to this day.
Only one of Rita Mae's books I didn't like or even finish.
I really enjoyed this book.
