London's most unusual sleuthing team, Inspector Thomas Pitt and his wife Charlotte, who cannot stay away from trouble. A most macabre and chilling mystery involving Charlotte's mother and her locket.
This is a very good Victorian mystery, with Inspector Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte as the super sleuths. It takes place in London, with a death and a lot of bizarre events going on, many secrets unfold.
My favorite quote from the book: "Was it possible that no matter how ugly, or how expensive, the facts were better? The truth deals only one wound, but suspicions a thousand".
Despite the seemingly never ending moralizing by the 'quality' Pitt and Charlotte manage to get through to the horrible truths behind the crime.
As always, Ms Perry's books are an interesting look into an era where women had so few options.

The Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries are so engaging. This one features wonderful character development and an exciting plot. A great read!
This is more like it! The mystery was center stage. If there was any background info I needed, it was carefully woven into the story. There were no long passages about how Victorians lived, worked, or played. Thank goodness. That being said...As usual Ms. Perry ended the story with unanswered questions. I felt like I have been left hanging until I read the next book. We'll see if I get any answers? Still working my way through this series.
Inspector Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, just cannot seem to stay away from trouble. When Charlotte learns of her mothers distress in losing a locket with a compromising picture, she has no idea that its just the beginning of a series of bizarre events that will end in sudden death. For hidden behind the sumptuous elegance of Rutland Place, where Charlottes mother lives, are terrible secrets so horrifying that only murder can conceal them. But the dangerous persistence of Charlotte and the quiet patience of Inspector Pitt will make it possible to unwind this most macabre and chilling mystery.
