During the last book in this series, I decided I wasn't getting enough pleasure out of them to keep reading, there's too many other books out there.. I forgot though, and checked this one out when I saw it at the library. Unfortunately it also was in the tepid "it's okay" category. I put it down to do something else so many times. As always I enjoy reading about the familiar characters but Leaphorn is not in this book, just mentioned a few times in passing. Of the two parallel storylines, I liked Chee's the most. I would have liked the decline of Lake Powell, and the subsequent uncovering of hidden things, to have taken a bigger role, but all in all it was a decent whodunit. And I'm pleased with Chee's decisions at the end. Manuelito's storyline had a good start but then the bit about her going undercover happened. So, so, unbelievable. Just...no. Will I remember my apathy when the next one comes out? Maybe, but the pull of a familiar name is strong, and I might want to know what Chee does next.
