i was not prepared for this book. the narration is brilliant. at first the book is about three dutch young adult siblings. one is almost home bound, one is a womanizer, and one is gay and in a relationship with another man. so far so good. the second part of the book is about the womanizer's current woman, eva, staying at the home of the sister, isabel, the almost reclusive. they begin as enemies and wind up as lovers. it is tumultuous and it is 1961. not exactly the right time to come out. the third and final part of the book is the unfolding of the back story. how dutch jews were taken away from their homes during world war II, and the dance between eva, the survivor of that home, and the three non jewish siblings who grew up in that home while she was homeless. it's such a difficult story for me, as a jew, and a part of the holocaust story that i've never read about in quite this way. it was unnerving and is settling into my bones and heart.
