THE SALARYMANS WIFE by Sujata Massey: Rei Shimura is a 27-year-old Japanese American English teacher. Her tiny paycheck barely allows her to exist in Tokyo, the worlds most expensive city, but she is determined to not use the plane ticket home to California that her parents have offered. She discovers the body of the wife of a wealthy businessman when she visits the ancient castle town of Shiroyama. Her subsequent involvement (crashing a funeral, posing as a bargirl among other things) angers the conservative police and the local citizenry but she presses on. Interesting character in a very different environment. Although the plot sounds like an Evanovich caper, this is totally different.

This book is a mess. I was interested in reading a mystery set in Japan as I am currently living in Japan. I would be surprise to learn that Sujita Massey had been to Japan in the last 20 years. This is a very basic murder-mystery book that leans heavily on a setting made of cliche's about Japan, most of which were really outdated when this book was written. On top of that the heroin, Rei, is flat. She just doesn't have any personality. So just skip this waste of time book.

I read this because of the reviews it sounded like something that I would enjoy reading. Something interesting about something I didn't know anything about. This was IT, held me spellbound with good descriptions and interesting characters. Throughly enjoyed learning more about Japan while delving into my favorite genre ... the good mystery story.

This story has murder,ancient history in the Japanese Alps. Nice reading
The first in a new series that has a Japanese-American woman living in Tokyo become enmeshed in murder mysteries. One reviewer said it's "crafted with suprising twists and turns,and steeped in the flavor of contemporary Japan". Author Janet Evanovich calls it "a cross-cultural mystery...with a decidedly sexy edge". I enjoyed reading it and look forward to others in the series
I am so hooked on this amazingly fun series, almost from the first chapter. Rei is smart,funny and exciting to follow, I look forward to the rest of the series.

I found this book to be an excellent mystery, while at the same time learning some new things about Japan. Rei Shimura is a very likeable and interesting character, and now that she has gone from teaching English to dealing in antiques, I think the next book will be even better. Can't wait to read the second one!
This book is a kooky suspense novel with a little romance thrown in for good measure. The book, which is part of a series, centers around an Asian/American 27 year old, who becomes an amateur sleuth when thrown into the middle of a murder investigation. Hijinks ensue, and attempts on her life are numerous, which spurs her forward in her investigations. It provided an interesting insight into Japanese culture, which I enjoyed very much. It was a light, quick read. Recommended for someone who isn't looking for anything to serious, and just wants to be entertained.

Worthy winner of the Agatha Award. First book of a series with Rei Shimura a 27 year old Japanese American living in modern Tokeo. Easy read with insights into to life, culture and expectations.
Excellent book.
Book is OK, just not something that could keep me up reading.

An interesting mystery with lots of local color in Japan.
Sujata Massey's hip female Asian American, twenty something protagist, spins the story from Japan's mountain ranges to back streets of Tokyo in riveting page turning style that is hard to put down.

The cover on my book is different than above. This is very good cross-cultural mystery about a Japanese-American English teacher living in one of Tokyo's seediest neighborhoods. Its got a great story line with lots of surprising twists and turns.I think this is an excellent new series and this particular book won the Agatha Award.
