Although disturbing at times, it was a page turner. I would recommend it.

Very moving and dramatic story with very descriptive language and characters that are believable. Disappointing that certain relationships weren't explored further. Great little novel, though!

I love Ursula Hegi's writing. Although this was not her most original effort, there were some highly memorable and vivid images. Definitely much better than most books out there!!

A smartypants read, but slow and somewhat boring in parts, and definitely not in the can't-put-down category. Hegi's "Stones from the River" and "The Vision of Emma Blau" are both flawlessly written and tell compelling stories - which made the lack of interesting narrative in "Salt Dancers" that much more puzzling. Her writing is of course technically fabulous, however, overall the book felt more like a series of assignments from a creative writing course all strung together. Writer pyrotechnics, if you will.
