Jimmy Buffet has a refreshing way of writing. I like his style. This one involves Tully Mars, a cowboy who ends up on a tropical island - with his horse - after running from the law after an incident at the pink poodle ranch..........yes, pink poodles. As I said, Mr. Buffet is creative.

A great read full of adventure and some tragedy. Buffet's lead Character and Narrator shares his crazy Caribbean escape that all began when he become a wanted fugitive. One misfortune after another lands Tully... and his horse, Mr. Twain, into the lap a new life changing adventure to some quaint yet exotic Caribbean paradise. After running from two moronic and unfortunately persistent bounty hunter Brothers, Tully runs into an old aquaintence, whose boss eventually helps get his charges cleared. Meanwhile he captures the respect and friendship of a 101 yr old woman (Cleopatra) who captain's of one the world's most beautiful historic schooner's. Cleopatra, on a mission of her own to restore an old lighthouse, rescues Tully from the Bounty Hunters and offers him a position on her fleet. After working diligently and searching the ends of the earth for the last "soul of Light" Lens, the lighthouse is complete and Tully who realizes he is a free man can finally settle down in one location, with a lifetime of treasures left to him by Cleopatra.

I really liked this book!! I'd never really heard of Jimmy Buffett before, besides the names, but he has a marvelous sense of adventure and a rollicking way of writing. I thoroughly enjoyed his descriptions of Caribbean life, fishing, boating, going off to find the mysterious lens, and his sometimes tawdry experiences along the way. He seems to look at life as a jolly good time, and learning some things along the way.
"Salty Piece of Land" continues the adventures of Tully Mars and Mr. Twain, picking up where "Tales From Margaritaville" left off. This novel has Tully running both from the law and his past as he helps a crusty old lady sea captain attempt to restore a decrepit lighthouse in the Bahamas. Stories like this one show that no matter where you live, visiting the tropics is as easy and convenient as turning the pages of a book.

A GREAT READ
I wasn't a huge fan of "Where is Joe Merchant?" when I read it a couple of years ago, so I wasn't all that excited going into "A Salty Piece of Land." But oh my goodness it is amazing. Likeable characters, connections to Buffett's songs and other pop-culture references worked in seamlessly, a compelling story, and of course great settings. I'm actually keeping my copy so that I can re-read it later.
I love Buffett and I am a Parrothead, BUT the writing in this book is awful. I have had to read sentences twice because I couldn't believe it was that badly written. I have a theory about why this book is so bad, 1. Either he had ALOT of help with writing his other books (can you say Carl Hiiasen?) 2. He didn't care about the quality of this book and just sent it to his publisher without any rewrites to make some quick money. Save your time and money on this one and just read Joe Merchant instead, or better yet pick up Hiiasen.
Excellent! Readers of other Jimmy Buffet novels will love this. Plus there is a cd in the back of the book!
Its not on any chart but the tropical island of Cayo Loco is the perfect place to run away from all of your problems.
I have always enjoyed Jimmy Buffett's songs, but was unaware of his talent for fiction. My husband read this, and said we should sell the house and buy a boat!! He is talented in his novels, and his music!!!

This book is as easy reading as Jimmy's music is easy listening. A good bit of philosophy tucked into a frothy island tale.
If you like Jimmy Buffett you will appreciate this mystery with characters that you are sure he as met as he drank Tequila.

This was a light, sometimes funny, quick read that didn't require any serious thought on my part. It is great for an afternoon's entertainment but it was not exciting enough to become one of my favorites.
It is Jimmy Buffett, we all know he has a handle on the happier things in life, worth the time to read it.

Usually like these "escape" books but I just couldn't get into this
If you like Jimmy Buffet, you'll probably like this book. It is a very light read, but I found it jumped around a bit too much for my taste. It is a good read for the beach.

This was my first Jimmy Buffet read, and I really liked it. The main character is someone who takes life as it comes, making the most of any opportunity that comes along, and making lifelong friends along the way. Fun read!

A little slow, but, a great gift. Anyone who likes Jimmy Buffett can appreciate this book, full of his antics.
While I love buffett this is not one of his better books. Fun and simple, the editors should have done a better job with him working on it. It is a good tale but I didnt care for how it was laid our and written down.
That said, I wouldnt recommend buying it, but getting from a library so it would cost you nothing and the enjoyment would be guilt free.

i'm a big fan of Jimmy Buffett's music, having attended quite a few concerts, i thought i'd give his books a try... not impressed with this one, i just kept waiting for it to grab me, but it never did, i found it a chore to continue on with the story, i wanted to like it, i just didn't.

This is a story of friendship, nautical adventure and with many twist and turns. From page one I could not put this book down. It is spiritual and gentle as told by an amazing storyteller. I would highly recommend this novel.
