It is Scottsboro, Alabama, in the fall of 1991. A snake-handling preacher named Glendel Summerford has just tried to murder his wife by snakebite. At gunpoint, he forces her to stick her arm in a box of rattlesnakes. She is bitten and nearly dies.

I highly recommend this book. He was able to successfully merge a study in sociology, religion and his very personal and fascinating journey into discovering something about himself. An exceptional read!!

I enjoyed his portrayal of mountain people. He was very even handed and didn't make snakehandlers out to be social deviants. It was a very honest, thoughtful, and interesting account of his experiences.

Great book! Kept my attention from start to finish. Very informative information about a religious culture I had very little knowledge about.
