It is the darkest days of World War II and the San Andreas, a Red Cross medical ship carriying wounded is on a perilous voyage from Halifax to Aberdeen. The ship is only a short distance out from port when a mysterious power failure knocks out the lights identifying her as a hospital transport and - without warning- she is under siege by a devastating attack of German war planes and U-boats.

A medical ship ferries the wounded across the stormy North Sea. Above and below it hovers an attack force of Luftwaffe and U-boats. In its quarters lurks a treacherous saboteur. And in its hold lies an astounding secret that could turn the San Andreas into a floating catacomb.

Veteran adventure and suspense writer MacLean returns to sea in his latest effort, which is set aboard the British hospital ship San Andreas en route from Halifax to Aberdeen during World War II. The first sign of trouble on board occurs when the ship's lights fail just before dawn. Then the vessel comes under a bombing attack that severely damages its superstructure and sinks its escort frigate. Bo's'n Archie McKinnon must take charge of the damaged ship and steer it to safety despite German aircraft, submarines, and sabotage. He must also learn the reason for German interest in the San Andreas . A tribute to the men of the British merchant fleet during World War II, this is for fans of the genre.

This exciting book is the first place where the repayment of WW2 Lend-Lease by USSR has come to my attention.
