A PTSD detective with a crap load of emotional baggage from childhood and a murder spree in a remote hotel in the Swiss Alps do not make a good story.
I am so tired of reading about the fat snow flakes, the heavy snowflakes, the big heavy white snowflakes, I mean how many times do you have to tell us that it is snowing!
Elin is a basket case and I couldn't stand her any more after about 20 pages in. Should of stopped there but still had hope-silly me!
Not realistic or even close in police procedures, the Elin thought this person, then this person, then this person, etc., it was just too tedious after 100 pages. How it was hailed as a great thriller is beyond me.

I had a hard time reading through this one. Something about the writing style, or maybe it's the characters, that just bugged me. It felt contrived, clichéd. Almost like when someone tells a joke and follows up with a "get it?" I for sure don't like how the men in the heroine's life undermined her, so she was always second-guessing herself. At about the halfway point, I skimmed to about the last chapter and I didn't even finish that. 1 star.

Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. The former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel in the Swiss Alps. Elin Warner has taken time off from her job as a detective. Her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel. The next morning Laure is missing and Elin is under pressure to find Laure. Now another woman has gone missing. This is an eerie, atmospheric novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I think I should have read the reviews before forcing myself to finish this one so I would know who the killer was. I was hoping for eerie tidbits about historical medical and mental health treatments, but none of that shows up until Chapter 79 and it's so terrible I'm hoping it's not true. I never connected with the main character. I feel like I'm pretty good at the willing suspension of disbelief in most of my reading life, but I just couldn't manage it for this book. I realize we all have issues to deal with, but I wanted to yell, "Stop doubting yourself!" at Elin more than once.
There were plenty of not so great reviews of this book, so by the time I actually got my hands on a copy, I was a tad ambivalent. I'm happy to report that it was better than the bad reviewers said. Our heroine, Elin is a cop on leave, which is explained in the book. She is meeting her brother whom she really hasn't spoken to in years. The characters are fairly well fleshed out, except for Elin's boyfriend, who is just sort of there, offering advice and eating. You will feel like you are in the mountains of Switzerland, where this takes place. My advice? Forget what the negative reviewers say, and read this for yourself!
This was a good atmospheric mystery. Some creepy elements throughout. A luxury hotel isolated and multiple murders occur while a massive snow storm and avalanche has them cut off. Police and rescue cannot get there for several days. Our protagonist is struggling with issues while attending her estranged brother's engagement party. She gets caught up in the crimes and is in over her head. I felt it bogged down a bit in the middle and read like a police procedural here and there but not for long. Another twist or surprise or revelation would occur that kept me turning the pages. It's a complex mystery to solve and it was all wrapped up BUT it threw in a curve ball right at the end that left me with questions and leaves the door open for a sequel. Yes, I will have to read it.
This book was hard to get through. I just could not click with the author's writing style. I felt the book talked down to the reader a little. I finished and was hoping the ending would have saved it but not for me. Also, I was ambivalent or just found the characters annoying.
