Although this book is biblical ficiton, it is not written from a spiritual perspective. There are sexual scenes and overtones. There also is graphic hygenic detail.
I think that this story is very differant from the real biblical story. It only follows the general story. It doesn't go along with the biblical character of Sarah at all.

If you liked "The Red Tent," then you will probably enjoy this book. It gives some insight into the female world of the typically male-centric Old Testament. Much time is typically spent studying Abraham, but this story focuses on his wife, Sarah. All I remember about Sarah from the Bible was that she was married to Abraham, she had her son when she was very old, her original name was Sarai (as she is called for most of this book), and that there was something with the Pharaoh when they got to Egypt and she had to pretend to be Abraham's sister. Otherwise, I can't really tell you much about Sarah from the Bible. This book gives her a voice and fleshes her out as a character and as a person. Yes, some liberties are taken and speculations are made (as with any biblical fiction story since the author is the one interpreting and filling in gaps). I liked how in this story Sarah wasn't perfect, she questioned Abraham's faith and had a hard time accepting the idea of one God at first. I think this made her much more human and easier to identify with. After all, her world was pretty much turned upside down after becoming Abraham's wife, so there would be times where she probably would have gotten annoyed or angry. There were a few instances where the writing just didn't seem right to me (I can't really describe it, perhaps the flow or where certain thoughts just seemed too modern), but overall I found this to be a great story and would recommend it.

Wow this was really a good book. I love this genre of women of biblical times. It is so interesting to think of the way they lived day to day life. Vibrant characters and great story lines. I really enjoyed this book and read it in two days.

This book is good for learning what life was like in that time period, but I have some serious problems with it. Sarai (she was not Sarah until she was old) and Abram (Abraham after he was old) were half brother and sister. This book is totally fiction and other than the time period and what it was like, it has no basis in reality. This author just took two names from the BIBLE and wrote a story with them.

Akin to The Red Tent, Sarah is the imagining of what the life of the wife of Abraham may have been like. Beautiful language, vivid, I loved it!

Fantastic look into what life may have been like during the time of Abram and Lot! If you have read and loved THE RED TENT, then this is a must-read!

ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS EVER! I LOVE THIS ENTIRE SERIES!!

Read this awhile ago. This is a novel about an amazing woman, and it truly takes you back in time to the long-ago world that she lived in. It also gives you some clues to how and why our spiritual way of thinking came to be, although it's not a book about religion at all. This was a very thought-provoking read and an entertaining one as well, like watching a good epic mini-series with a female hero. I highly recommend it to others.

If you enjoy biblical and histporical novels, this is for you! Although fiction, this book put you in "Sarah's shoes" so to speak and transports you to a time & place unknown and unfamiliar unless you are a student of the Bible. Historical and cultural facts abound. A good read form a unique perspective.

The first in a series of historical novels about women in the Old Testament. A well written story grounded in biblical source material

Wonderful read. I do want to read the rest of the novels in this trilogy. I also recommend that you read Genesis and Abraham's story, and then follow these up with The Red Tent. Biblical fiction, but details of daily life well researched.

This is the first book in the Canaan Trilogy, and my first by this author. I really didn't know what to expect. The author gives an insight into the culture of the times 4000 years ago. This book gave me much to think about, especially the cultural behaviors. But you have to remember, though Sarah and Abraham are real Biblical characters, this is a fictional account of their lives woven around some truths from the Bible. Book is well-written and held my attention throughout.

Wonderful read! Hard to put down. I will pick up the next two books in this series, Zipporah and Lilah.

Enjoyed this book, and it was a quick read. Do not plan to read the rest of the series. It reminded me of The Red Tent. I think Sarah's character was written in a way that she really breathed with life, and was interesting and brave. I had strong emotions about the fascinating stories and situations in the story. Try it, you might like it too.

This is a great book. Will read the series.
I exspect this book to have more factual info with in the novel.
I enjoyed this book. I find the customs so interesting. If you enjoy this book you will also like The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.
This was a well written, quick read a great transformation of one's life. A fiction never the less, but enjoyable. I found it much more easier to read than The Rent Tent which I enjoyed but found difficult to follow at times. I am looking forward to reading Zipporah and Lilah. The author brought Sarah alive to me, would have liked to see how she was a parent!
Loved this book. It sparked my interest in the Abraham story.
The story line uses the historical scripture story but reader must remember this is speculative fiction for entertainment. Sometimes it reads like a romance novel.
I thought it was awesome! It took me a few days, I kept putting it down and not caring about getting back into it, but after it got rolling I couldn't put it down and had to read it all that night. Very entertaining story!
loved this book. It brought her to life for me. I loved the detail of the period, customs and the story aligned with the bible.
Wonderful insight into the times of the Old Testiment. I really liked this book and would recommend it as a very enjoyable read!
This book was so clearly written by a man who has no concept of what it meant to be a woman in the ancient world and was apparently just getting his jollies sexualizing a historical person. This book could have been so much more.
Very interesting book. But you must remember this is a novel, so much of the book is speculation. However it has some very interesting insites of how our world was in the beginning. From the very rich and opulent, from which Sarah came to the tribe of outsiders from which Abraham came.
Loved this book!
A very good story about the wife of Abraham
If you enjoy historical, Biblical fiction, like "The Red Tent" you will love this book. Marek Halter takes a unique approach the life of Sarah. He takes a few versus in the Bible that speak of her life and turns them into a tapestry describing her life. This was a very enjoyable work of fiction overall, and I would recommend it to any reader.
If anyone hasn't read the book, I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this account of Sarah's story. It made her seem more a real person, and not just a figure you've read about. I am anxious to read the next books in the series.
Excellent book - quick read!!
Provocative and interesting view of women's life in Bible days. Recommended, well written.
Very good read.

Very captivating story line. Not very Biblical in many respects. Very lude and graphic! Not Recommended for the unwed!!

Awesome!!! I read it in one day
This is an ARC copy, NOT a hardcover.
I didn't much like it; thought it was underdeveloped and predictable. But anyone who loved the Red Tent will probably enjoy.
