The setting of this book...the Lehigh Canal in Walnutport, Pennsylvania...is an interesting choice. However, I find this author difficult to enjoy simply because I like to read more complex plots. The story is a good story but predictable with no depth.

Nice quick read and an ending to the series. Enjoyed learning about canaling. A hard rugged life to live. Making a choice with God's leading.

Sarah Turner is a beautiful 27 Year old widow who succeeded her dead husband as a lock tenderer with 3 children ages 8, 6, 4 on the Lehigh Canal. Sarah would love nothing better than to leave the canal work permanently. It is hard, accident prone and death prone. She would love to open a bakery but does not have the money to do so. She has two men who want to marry her and suddenly propose marriage but she can not except either for one or more of 3 reasons. She wants 1. A christian Husband 2. HE can not work on the dangerous canal and 3.She must love him and he must love her and her children and dog. That is a tall order and can Sarah find this man? Plus remember in these days in a work related death or accident there was no insurance or compensation. Enjoy Sarah's adventures as one after another thing happens to her, her family and friends. This is a great work of historical fiction. This is book 3 in this series. I have posted all three books in this series Kelly's Chance, Betsy's Return and Sarah's Choice. I have found this historical fiction series fascinating because it tells of how hard and labor intensive the lives of the canal workers were and is very descriptive of the early days of the Lehigh Canal.

This story is about Sarah and her children living in Walnutport,Pennsylvania summer of 1898. Sarah worked as a lock person it was her husband job till he got hurt and pinned in the lock. The lock she would cranked open the wicket gates to fill the lock with water she lower the upper head gate then the boats would be drawn into the stone walls locks then the upper gates were raised the upper wicket gates would close so that no more water could enter lock. She then lower wicket gates were open the water would rush out of the lock then the lower gates were open then the boats would be drawn out to the lower level of the canal. Then Sarah would open the main gate to let the boats out and on there way down the canal. She hated living on the canal because she afraid the children would fall in the canal. She also made bread to sell to the boat men and there family's to make extra money. She also hated not be able to spend more time with her children the only day off was a Sunday that when she try to catch on her sleep and spend the day with the children. If it wasn't for Maria her mother in-law she wouldn't be able to do the job as the lock tender but with her mother-in-law health failing. Sarah was warred if her and the children make on there own her son Sam wanted to help but she told him no. She wanted him to go to school and get a education so he wouldn't have to work on the canal. To find out what happens to Sarah and her family living on the canal pick up the book of three written by Wanda Brunstetter called Brides of Lehigh Canal. Sarah is the third one.
