Fourth in the fantasy/mystery series. Liam (I-am-not-a-wizard) Rhenford has been asked to serve as an investigator with the traveling circuit judge. Along with his little dragon familiar, Fanuilh, he sets off in the company. The circuit judge has recently lost her husband, who before his death was one of the two investigators, and the remaining man is seriously annoyed to hear that the judge is giving the most serious cases to Rhenford. Rhenford's natural ability to hunt out the truth usually serves him well but in this case, he doesn't know the customs of the court, much of the law, or the politics involved. He's also got a tendency to think most people wish him well, but this isn't always the case. It lands him in serious trouble, but with Fanuilh's help he is able to clear his name - mostly - and find the guilty. I like this series because it's the crime solving that's in the foreground, not the magic; the cases all involve people who'v misused magic but it's Liam's questioning and logic that lead him to the truth. These books are out of print, but fun if you can find them.
