This is a fairly good book, but the more I read this series, the more I am convinced that this author merely started writing it so he could get in on the marketing niche mad popular by series like Artemis Fowl, Septimus Heap, and Harry Potter.

So far, Percy story has the stereo-typical, misunderstood hero plot devices:
1) He's trying to do good while there's still adults, who are supposed to be his guardians, harassing him about being a trouble-maker.
2) He goes off to school... ahh hem... I mean camp, which is a place for other children like himself.
3) He has a know-it-all girl sidekick.
4) There's a bad guy who's coming back for revenge.
5) A prophecy is also a part of the story.

Plus, several other things that I don't need to take the time to mention because you get the point.

So, if you're expecting a series with something new and exciting, you may be disappointed. But, if you're looking for an interesting spin on some classic mythologies and a few laughs, this isn't a bad book for any age.

I have to say that I enjoyed this book more than the first one, and that's not something I can usually say about sequels/ subsequent books in a series. I felt that the first one, The Lightening Thief, was just OK (though of course a necessary read to follow the rest of the series). This one, I feel, was much more interesting, and left me eagerly waiting for the other books off my wishlist! One thing that I have to say about Percy compared to other characters in similar genres is that Percy is flawed and isn't trying to be a hero. He doesn't exude that "perfect" aura that other characters in similar genres seem to do. He's basically a kid thrown into these wild situations and he doesn't pretend like he knows what he's doing...he's just hoping to survive. I like the fact that he's a flawed hero, it makes him more realistic.

Anyway, this particular book finds Percy at the end of a rather quiet school year, but of course the start of summer brings him the start of a new adventure! This time he isn't the one who is sent on the quest by Camp Half-Blood (someone else is picked for that), but rather one of the gods sends him instead as a personal favor. Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson have to rescue Grover from a rather bizarre situation and find the Golden Fleece to save Camp Half-Blood. The ending certainly plants some important plot seeds for the next book! For some strange reason, Tyson (newly introduced in this book) is now my favorite character. Go figure! :-P

A good follow-up to the Lightning Thief. Our least favorite in the series but still an excellent book! If you have a child who is slightly interested in Greek Mythology or even if they aren't, give them this book to read. They will love it!

I am liking this series more and more. The first book was good but nothing fantastic. I thought this book was a lot better. It wasn't as repetitive as the first in the series and that made it more enjoyable. The Greek Mythology references are fun and I will be reading the third book soon.

This book was written for children and teens though I know quite a few adults who are enjoying this series as well. It can be entertaining for any age though there is not as much guess work for those of us who know the myths. You can read my book blog entry on this book here.

This is the second in one of my favorite children's fantasy series ever--the best in the last few years, along with the Peter and the Starcatchers books. This is just as good as the first, with lots more about cyclopses. Very faithful to traditional Greek mythology, and a great choice for kids AND adults who like Harry Potter. Definitely read the Lightning Thief first.

After reading The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Bk 1), my ten year old daughter & I were reading to dive into this one. So glad we could find it on PaperBackSwap! Action, suspense, kid-friendly - my daughter & I took turns reading this out loud.

I like how this series ignites an interest in classical mythology, geography, and history, while at the same time telling Percy's story about growing up with a single mom, having to deal with school bullies, living in the city, and other things so many kids can relate to.

Highly recommend!

Although I see some similarities to Harry Potter (school/camp for kids with powers, evil force being slowly brought back to power), this series contains sufficient original material to keep me entertained. I really like how it introduces Greek mythology to young adults.

After seeing the movie based on book #1, this is the first of the books that I've read. There are some major differences and I prefer the awkwardness of the book characters to the overly cool Hollywoodness of the movie versions. (For the record, Percy is only 13 in this book, a year after the first book took place. The movie version features a 16- or 17-year old who is, of course, quite easy on the eyes.)

Ooooohhh! I liked this book much better than the first, mainly due to the Greek myths that Percy meets during his journey. I love how Riordan puts a modern twist on the myths - it's fun! Percy is getting farther and farther into the god's pile o' omnipotent shite, and he is handling it quite well. He has some help from a god or 2 in this story, and has to travel through some rough waters, literally, and battle some scary monsters, to help restore the safety of Camp Half-Blood. Of course, he doesn't do this without the help of his trusty, intelligent Athenian friend, Anabeth; his new devoted friend, Tyson; and his favorite goat-boy, Grover! ! I ADORE TYSON! What a wonderful addition he is to Percy's life. The end of the book has sent me grabbing for the next installment immediately!(

I sat down with a somewhat limited expectation of the series after having watched the movie a while back. I was surprised and excited once I started reading the series. This book in particular was a lot of fun, visiting a few real life locations that I've been to while showing the mythical side of them as well.

I have not read this book myself, but my husband has (age 37). To put this review into perspective, let me say that my husband is NOT a reader. It takes him years to slog through a book. However, we saw the Percy Jackson movie (which we both enjoyed) and he is currently enrolled in a Greek Mythology class so he absconded with my recently purchased (that day) copy of the book and started reading. He DEVOURED this book in a week, and then grabbed the next in the series on our next trip to the store. The rate at which he read the book and the fact that he couldn't wait to dive into the next one is high praise indeed! He even chose to read this book in bed prior to going to sleep instead of watching TV, as is his norm! (star rating based on my husbands response)

Now I can have it back to read, lol.

Since the moment I finished the first Percy Jackson book, I wanted to make time to read the follow up. I adore Percy as a character and wanted to see what other kinds of adventures he was going to get into. What makes it all the more amusing to me is that he doesnt even want this stuff! It just finds him by default because of who he is.

We start this book about a year after the beginning of the previous one, as far as I can tell anyway. Its almost summer again, and unfortunately for Percy, its been requested that he not come back to camp this year, with no real explanation as to why. However, Percy soon finds himself in an all new adventure to not only save his friends, but the camp hes come to love.

I agree with the posters before me. This book far surpassed the first one. It was much better written and you started to care about the characters. I finished this and started the third one moments later. I can't wait to see how this series of books plays out. I feel that it is nowhere near Harry Potter but in this series I am learning so much about Greek mythology.
