For all its desirable qualities, it is a further wonder that an afghan is something very enjoyable to make, as one falls into the rhythm of creating it stitch by stitch and watches the patterns or pictures take shape. And as enjoyable as it is to produce for oneself, it is even more enjoyable to give, for it speaks of time and thought and energy expended on behalf of another, which adds up to an expression of love. It is not surprising that afghans have been, for many centuries, one of the most popular of all handcrafted items. Welcome to the wonderful world of afghans.

In this book, we offer eighteen new, designer afghans to knit and eighteen to crochet, so that there is something for everyone. Each has been designed to be worked in small pieces so that they can be carried along with you and assembled later. Those that are particularly easy or difficult to work have been marked as such. Further help is provided by eight pages of full-color photographs showing each afghan plus a black and white photo of each focusing on stitch detail, clear step-by-step instructions with patterns and diagrams, and a stitch glossary complete enough to enable even the novice to start working. Among the designs are a half-dozen for the children, featuring bouncing bears, bright balloons, pretty bouquets.

For those who would enjoy "painting" a picture, there are several afghans depicting overall scenes -- the knitted Seascape, in which seagulls soar over a white lighthouse and a wash of sea and sand, and Blue Willow, which was inspired by the ancient china pattern painted with weeping willows and a bridge waiting to unite two young Oriental lovers. For the traveler or outdoor sports enthusiast, there's the unique tweedy Portable Lap Robe that folds up into a neat envelope-style carry-all large enough to hold a pillow. For warmth and sheer beauty, there's the lavish mohair Woven Plaid, crocheted in the misty colors of the Scottish highlands -- lavender, sea green, and off-white—and the extravagant gossamer gold of Flowing Lace, light enough to swath oneself in as an almost-cover-all shawl for winter-night wrap-ups or brisk fall walks in the woods.

Tradition with a twist is the keynote of the handsome Argyle Borders, the thickly tasseled Irish Knit Updated, and the Scandinavian-influenced Snowflakes sprinkled starkly white on a winter-blue background. A feast for the eyes and an inspiration to the imagination, the afghans presented here are sure to entertain the handworker for a long time to come and to give pleasure to the cherished ones who receive them.
