I picked this up thinking of my brother, who's a junker. I'm not all that interested in the junking thing myself but this book was much better than I expected. It was very amusing, touching but not sappy, and the main character (Richard) had a distinctive personality that never seemed contrived. I kept thinking it was a memoir and not a novel.

The only negative I can think of is, in a few places in the book, there's a page or two that deals with animal cruelty: Richard's love interest works for the Detroit Anti-Cruelty Shelter. Nothing insensitive in the writing, I just hate thinking about it - way too sad. If I read the book again I'd skip those pages.

A fun, quirky, sentimental first novel with unique characters and a clever story. I also recommend Zadoorian's second novel, THE LEISURE SEEKER.

Richard owns a second hand store filled with the odd and obsolete. He keeps himself busy with estate sales, garage and yard sales. Richard's Mother has Cancer and he cares for her until she dies. She leaves behind a house packed with memories and some of the things he finds will change how he sees his parents forever. A very unexpected romance happens and Richard finds himself dealing with not only loss but love. What a fascinating story. Characters have a hint of mystery but defined enough that you know them and like them, flaws and all. I found myself reading in one day because I just did not want to put it down. I had to see what happened next.
