The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore is a historical fiction novel about life on a US leper colony. I never knew these colonies even existed, so this was an educational experience for me. It's surprising to know such things occurred in the USA known as being the "Land of the Free."
Mirelle West is a Hollywood Actor's wife who contracts leprosy and is sent away to a government living facility in the south. She goes from living a life of luxury to being shunned.
The story follows the many emotions she experiences as she learns to live a new life away from her family and hopes for a cure. At first Mirelle is angry, bitter and mean but going through the emotional turmoil of her condition surrounded by others who understand, Mirelle begins to heal from past tragedies and grow as a person.
