This book is a good book for younger kids. i remember reading it when I was 8 and absolutely loving it, then reading it again at 12 and finding it quite boring.

Fantasy! Adventure! Ogres, mermaids, and an eerie doorway hidden below a London train platform! What more could you ask for?

Under Platform 13 in one of London's busiest train stations is an old doorway covered with peeling posters. Behind it is the entrance to a magical kingdom - an island where humans live happily with mermaids, ogres, and mysterious creatures called mistmakers. When a beastly woman names Mrs. Trottle kidnaps the island's young prince, it's up to a strange band of rescuers to find him, save him, and return him to the King and Queen. But can the rescuers - an orge, a hag , a wizard, and a fey - troop around London unnoticed? And what if the Prince doesn't want to go back?

This was a pretty decent book. It was written for a much younger audience, but if you can get past that or know someone young that likes books with magic worlds and outlandish characters, this is a great book.

A tween who lives in a windowless room under cupboard with a spoiled companion in the house, a slightly over-the-hill wizard, a secret passageway to another world located in a train station...sound familiar? All written before HP. In fact, if JK Rowling wasn't firmly ensconced in the Pantheon of Great Writers, I'd say that there's some plaigerism going on. Ibbotson's characters are a lot sillier than JK's, and aren't quite as tome-like, but it should appeal to the same audience. It's a lot like Island of the Aunts.

Charming book that will remind you of Harry Potter quite a bit with two of the main characters and a certain plot-line, though the over-arching storyline is different. A great read for kids who will greatly enjoy the young heroine, who is trying to grow up to be a really good hag.

Copyright 1994...this book sure reminds me of the Harry Potter series. Alot of the same types of characters, hags, banchees, witches, a wizard. A kidknapping of the King and Queens son and how it took 9 years and 1 week to get him back. Elementary grade level, not really for adults.
