Its a complicated story just like anyone's life when you start talking about the details. The story started off slow for me but really hit it's stride once the author went to Clemson.
The author and I are contemporaries in a way -- we are not the same age nor followed the same path -- we overlapped at many of the places at the same time in Southern California. It's highly probably that I saw him at times, particularly since San Diego was a tight knit gay community.
I understand his spiral, I saw it many times (I'll let you read the book for details). Not sure if it's a coincidence or irony, that many I saw lose control of their alcohol or drug use were raised like the author in strongly religious households -- Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Roman Catholics, Orthodox Jews, Southern Baptists and other Evangelical Christians.
I enjoyed the book.
It turns out that we are contemporaries - not the same age or the same path -- but we overlapped in many
