"In 1843, novelist Victor Hugos beloved nineteen-year-old daughter drowned." He feels lost without her and seeks solace through seances that affect his life dramatically. As the story unfolds, Hugo finds himself seduced by an entity (ghost) he calls the Shadow of the Sepulcher encountered through the seances. The Shadow symbolizes the devil whose intent is to lure Hugo into his clutches. Can Hugo survive or will he become a follower of the Shadow of the Sepulcher? One must read this fascinating book to discover what happens.

I felt that the author's enchantment with Victor Hugo and his life is quite apparent. Yes, we can find much about him as a statesman and author but his personal life is less obvious. Reading Hugo's letters, she becomes inspired by how ordinary he was in many ways including love for his family. Trying to write the tale with her computer she found could not begin this story until she picked up an old fountain pen and and found the story flowed from its point. Strange, isn't it, yet she filled three notebooks before she was finished. This is the tale that emerged about the personal side of a most famous man and his love for his young daughter lost all too soon. I really enjoyed this story as well as the author's comments following it. It's a wonderful read and I thank the publisher and the author for making this first read possible for me.
