If this book was your first experience with Cathy Maxwell, keep in mind that this is not a good representation of the wonderful stories she normally writes. I don't know what happened here, but her usual engaging and entertaining style wasn't present this time around. This story had so much potential! It's not often that you come across a hero who's a vicar and keeps a low profile, who's in a sense more like your average, everyday type of guy who wants to help the people around him. A hero's unrequited love is always a delicious component to a story, too. I liked him; he was more real than a lot of over-the-top type of heroes that inundate the genre. His mysterious background was intriguing; unfortunately, one character alone cannot carry the story for long.
On the other hand, I couldn't connect with Corrine. She was rather obnoxious, the type of independent heroine who is determined to do things her way without fully understanding the potential consequences of such actions. I understood Will's internal struggle with his feelings for Corrine, but I certainly didn't get that her feelings for him matched his for hers.
Ultimately, I ended up skipping to the last few pages to get the resolution of Will's background, and of course it all came together quite conveniently and predictably. I've been a long-time fan of Maxwell's, but The Seduction of Scandal was far from her finer works. I recommend that you pass this one off as a fluke, and hope that this weird writing slump is temporary. 3 stars.

I love Cathy Maxwell but this was not a book I could finish. Corinne was not a character I could like. I found her very selfish and snooty. Maybe she redeemed herself later on in the book but I found that I really didn't care.

I ordered this book mainly because the heroine has my namesake... As early as the second chapter I know the story was going down hill from there, but I kept reading hoping it would be as good as Maxwell's other books, what a disappointment!!!!! :(( From the weak plot to the annoying heroine, this book was badly delivered. Suck weak languages, personalities and the characters. Sorry to say that I, who loved all historical romances, was sadly very disappointed in Maxwell's latest book. I couldn't even finish it, I kept skipping paragraphs after paragraphs, then pages, just to see if it'll get better. Finally I just gave up half way through :( It's nothing near as well written as her many previous books I have enjoyed over the years.
