An above average read, but overall, I am left with mixed feelings:
The story was somewhat unique and historically interesting, although a little simplistic.
Overall, I felt the book was a little over-edited and all the "good parts" were missing or rushed; and so I am able to summarize the story in a few sentences, and which leads me to believe that the writing was lacking in depth, e.g. World building, character development, etc. (even with mostly likable characters, and an interesting premise for a Bk 2...).
(possibly it is obvious that the writer is moving into ya from previously writing children's books?)
Continuing, the Book is definitely better than most debut fiction, but in summary, I guess I request more compelling characters and a more complex pace when reading ya...
(Rutkoski tries to reach the widest audience with the book relating to the Paranormal, Historical and Romance sub-genres, but I don't feel that I experienced anything riveting, and so i overall have a feeling of being unsatisfied).
Lastly, I do look forward if the Writer does decide to evolve the Story into a Series...
