This was such a great exploration of the urban fantasy genre. I like it because it's mostly a really interesting detective story. The fantasy parts are important, but still secondary. Also Gwen is a great character. She's not a smart-a$$, she's just someone who's had a lot of pain and suffering in her life, but she's doing the best she can, emotionally speaking. Maybe, it's just that there's no self-aware smugness. She's obviously very attractive and can take care of herself, but she doesn't obsess over her relationships. Her life is just happening, she's not talking about it. I liked her, therefore, I liked the book.

Not sure why this series hasn't gotten more attention. It's a pretty good entry in the urban-elf-punk genre. Offers fey royalty and political machinations mixed with a police detective plotline. If you like gumshoes like Sara Paretsky's VI Warshawski and you ALSO like the Karen Marie Moning or Kim Harrison books, you'll probably enjoy this. Just one caution: if you devour the first book in the series and then want the next, you'll discover it's pretty hard to find. No sign of the third title yet, but the second book ends with a great conspiracy hook.

I really liked this book. It's fast paced and I liked the characters involved. I wish there were more in the series than just two.
