7/27/08 After publishing three novels in the Tamir Triad, a prequel to the Nightrunner books, I was thrilled to see at the bookstore a paperback *new* Seregil & Alec book. Because it's published first in mass- media paperback, I didn't have to debate with myself whether I should get it now or wait. I just bought.
If you, like me, have followed the Nightrunner books you're going to want this one. The paranoid Queen doesn't trust Seregil and Alec and sends them on an errand to her sister. On the way there they are ambushed, their escorts are killed, they are kidnapped and sold into slavery.
Seregil and Alec have gotten themselves out of some very hot water in the past and how they are able to do so in this novel is fascinating, diverting and wholly original.
Highly recommended.

This is an unexpected continuation of the story of the Nightrunner begun in what was called The Nightrunners Trilogy. The story continues on after the destruction of Seregil's home, the death of Nysander, the wiard, and the supposed end of the "Watchers", a secret guardian, "militaristic" group for the country of Skala. The new queen has no love for the nightrunners or the Watchers. She is also suspicious of her younger sister, Klia. The queen orders a delegation of Seregil and Alec (nightrunners and lovers) to seek out Klia who is on campaign. Along the way, the delgation is attacked and Seregil and Alec find themselves victim of slavers. What happens after that is mostly evil magic and revenge by someone from Seregil's past. Most of the "action" takes place in memory and in the main characters' thoughts. And the "alchemist" who has them has an evil plan to attain an elixir for life. There is a plan to save the two new slaves before more really bad things happen to them. The book is an easy read, but it really helps if the reader remembers a lot of detail from the original trilogy. Do not start with this book without reading the first 3 in the series.
This book is to be followed by another book entitled "The White Road" which is to be released in Summer of 2009.
