It was just okay. The worldbuilding is definitely lacking here. Oldworld, NewWorld, made up countries, countries we know (Japan etc), but no explanations of how any of this came to be. Why doesn't NewWorld allow magic but OldWorld does? I don't like infodumps, but I sure would have liked a lot more context for this alternate reality. The made-up slang was a bit tedious to get through as well, although you can figure it out from the context. I liked the origami, would have liked an explanation for the algebra book, mostly liked Maggie. The pace picks up at the end with the daring rescue, but you wonder what the reprecussions are going to be. Ah well, McKinley's earlier works are much better.
