It doesn't get any better than Susanna Kearsley. I am always recommending her work. I have read every book. She infuses her work with history, magic, romance, a touch of a ethereal presence, and strong female leads. The young lad in this story is delightful and steady (hint: in a later book, you get to read about him all grown up and very dashing). The characters are well written, the story well developed, with a lovely ending.

This is a really good read! Romantic suspense, with the emphasis on suspense with a touch of the paranormal and a dose of history. Great combination! Moves the book along at a good pace. This is my third book by this author and she handles this genre so very well. If you don't know this author, try her, you'll like her!

This is another great read from Susanna Kearsley featuring mystery, romance, archaeology and more than a touch of the supernatural. As one of her early books, it does not measure up to The Winter Sea, but is still great escapist reading.
Fast paced and very interesting. This reminded me of the Gothic romance/suspence stories of Mary Stuart, Dorothy Eden, and Phyllis A. Whitney. A woman living away from home in a different country embarking on a new job -- living in a large estate where mystery lurks in every corner.
Everything you could want from a paranormal romance. Beautiful writing of spooky happenings at a large Scottish house on the coast, strong lovable characters, quirky pets, tension, danger and mystery. I whole heartedly recommend this book.
Good story about a archaeological dig in Scotland where there is a ghost who helps and protects -- interesting twists and turns.

I DO LIKE THE WAY MS. KEARSLEY WRITES HER BOOKS. THIS IS A VERY WELL THOUGHT OF STORY WITH HISTORY AND A GHOST OF ROME .

If you are a fan of Mary Stewart or Barbara Michaels, you'll love Susanna Kearsley. Her characters are well-drawn, the plot moves at a nice pace, and the mystery and interaction among the characters is plausible and moves at a nice clip to keep you turning the pages. Verity is an archeologist working on a site with 3 other archaeologists from vastly different backgrounds--the wealthy older Irishman who is in charge of the site but has a bad reputation in the field as he's spent his career searching for an old Roman site, a handsome Englishman that she'd been involved with in the past and can't take no for an answer, and the divine Scotsman. The romance is there for intrigue and does not overtake the plot.
The story revolves Robbie, a young boy who lives nearby and has the second sight. The child often sees the ghost of a Roman Sentinel. And Verity may not see the Sentinel but she hears his footsteps and feels the change in the atmosphere when he's nearby. Verity's trapped by her rational side as a scientist, and her desire to believe that the boy is not only seeing a ghost but can hear him speak as well. If you're looking for a book to get lost in, this one will fit the bill.
