Can I say wow?...

I mean, I knew Lily's story was gonna be dark. I expected her to be depressed to the point of making the reader depressed. Of course, I expected her to work out her issues throughout the story. What I did not expect was the story to be so good. The character to be so strong. Lily does have some serious issues to work with, and a heavy burden on her shoulders, but she is not miserable. She is not depressing. She is resourceful, a fighter... so much more than a survivor. I read the story and felt ashamed for all those times I've whined about petty nuisances, which are nothing compared to what Lily went through. I also felt proud of her for fighting her way out of the darkness and refuse being pitied and being treated like a victim.

This book series is a must-read for mystery novels. But it is also a must-read for women of all ages. I loved it.

This series just keeps getting better and better.

Even in a sleepy Arkansas town, the holidays can be murder. Lily Bard is going home for the holidays. More comfortable in baggy sweats than bridesmaid's frills, Lily isn't thrilled about attending her estranged sister's wedding. She has moved to Shakespeare, Arkansas, to start a new life, cleaning houses for a living, trying to forget the violence that once nearly destroyed her. Now she's heading back to home and hearth--just in time for murder.

The town's doctor and nurse have been bludgeoned to death at the office. And Lily's detective boyfriend suddenly shows up at her parents' door. Jack Leeds is investigating an eight-year-old kidnapping and the trail leads straight to Lily's hometown. It just might have something to do with the murders...and her sister's widowed fiance. With only three days before the wedding, Lily must work fast to clean up the messy case before her sister commits...marriage!

Although this story, from the Lily Bard series, doesn't actually take place in Shakespeare, it is another page-turner! Lily again finds a dead body and deals with family issues the same time. Charlaine Harris has done it again by writing another mystery you won't want to put down.

I'm enjoying the development of Lily's character and enjoyed getting to know her family in this book. Also like the strength of her detective boyfriend,Jack, as I think she needs someone with his background and abilities as they continue to work side-by-side in these Harris books.

Yes, this is the Charlaine Harris who writes the Sookie Stackhouse books This is a mystery, and a very good one. Harris can write characters with the best of them, and plot like crazy. If you like very strong female characters, you will like Lily Bard.

This is my favorite of the Lily Bard books. Lily is a strong female protagonist, and I really enjoy the writing in this series. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the Sookie Stackhouse books or really any mystery series with a strong woman with an interesting backstory.

In Lily's third appearance, she heads home to Bartley, Arkansas-always an uncomfortable scenario for the introverted Lily-for her sister Varena's Christmas wedding. But Lily's got more to worry about than being a bridesmaid for a sister to whom she's no longer close. Soon after she arrives in Bartley, Lily's private detective boyfriend shows up too, and not just for moral support: He's investigating a four year old unsolved kidnapping only to find that the case hits close to home. Varena's new husband is the widowed father of a girl bearing a remarkable resemblance to the vanished child....

Still not my favorite series by this author, but entertaining and readable. I wish I liked Lily more, but she seems mean and cold, even taking into account her history.

This small town murder mystery has a background rape story that I wasn't interested in reading.
