A stranger walking through the Ozarks in the rain meets a young boy returning from the local mill. The stranger asks about local lodgings and the story begins. Woven into the traditions, superstitutions and hospitality of the Ozark mountains is a story of love that transends the grave, redemption of misquided ambition, and a story of an enduring friendship.
The book has several subplots that make the story twist and turn like a mountain road. Beautifully written with a spellbinding story the book will keep you interested and sad when it ends. A good read for any one wanting a good story of human interaction.

A bit pollyanna-ish and preachy; but normal for the era it was written about. Dialect makes it a bit hard to read. It's a good read for middle schoolers.
