This book is amazing! But if you disagree that God's word is infallible you will not like this book. You must believe that God means what He says and says what He means, especially that if you don't discipline you HATE your child. Scripture, nor Tripp, advocates abuse or even discipline in anger, but it advocates heart oriented heart change by people who know they need the discipline of God in the same manner for their own chage. He doesn't twist scripture!

GREAT! Come on people he does not mean to kill your kid, spanking is effective if used right. We all know people who take ANYTHING to far. Really makes you think about things. Lots and lots of good advice.

For new parents or parents with teens, this is pretty much the only book you will ever need to read for help with raising your children. The beginning of the book walks through getting to know your child's heart when they sin, or do something wrong--not just simply correcting an outward behavior. Then, the back of the book is divided into sections as your child grows up, so you can just refer to the chapter of the age of your child for a quick reference in that area. This book is an amazing help and has truly blessed my family--we have 3 children and it is such a joy to shepherd their hearts. Definitely a book you should read and refresh yourself with once a year. Your children are well worth this investment. :)

A great book for Christian parents desiring to lead their children to obedience by guiding their hearts to desire Christ, rather than having the child obey simply to get themselves out of trouble. Highly recommended.

Very Christian, very right-on advice for raising children. Somewhat heavy reading, but the lessons for parents is worth it. This works.
This was an interesting read but I found it too theoretical with too little specific advice to be much help.

I wasn't so impressed with this book. It is hard to continually think of a child's reasons for why they do something when it is currently occuring. Sometimes a parent does not have time to sit there and think first.
I agree with a lot of the author's viewpoint that raising children to love and obey God starts at home however I just cannot get past his suggestion that a child should be spanked for every slight infraction. He also makes no indication of when he begins this harsh spanking should begin. Children disobey at a few young age. Is he suggesting we spank infants every time they disobey us? If I spanked my 2yr old every time she disobeyed me I would do nothing but spank and then comfort her. There are other ways to discipline children. Often just reminding her to "say 'Yes Mommy'" is enough.
Ted Tripp's advocated methods are not biblically sound. By distorting Old Testament Scripture, he advocates for numerous ways to spank children from INFANCY until they are whipped into submission, certainly not the methods our Lord Jesus Christ would have ever advocated. The same scriptures he uses to back up his methods (from Psalms mentioning "The Rod") literally mean to guide and teach your children, not to literally whip them. I long for the day when those claiming to be "Christian" will be revealed for the authors they really are, misguided by Satan himself and repentant for the pain they have misled so many parents to inflict on their innocent children. You cannot be Christian in word, yet ignore Christ in your actions.
Christian parents, or parents of any faith can and should discipline without violence (which is exactly what spanking is...hitting). It is not necessary and potentially harmful physically, and absolutely psychologically harmful. Logical consequences help children to learn after making a mistake. Hurting a child only creates fear and the insecure feeling of deserving physical suffering, nothing God desires for His children.

This book is a distortion of Scripture and advocates a harsh and punitive style of parenting with much emphasis on spanking! As a parent and an early childhood educator and vehemently oppose the parenting advice in this book!
