The story takes place during the Gold Rush but the dialogue is very "modern-day." The Sheriff calls her "Baby" practically every other sentence after they make love. He has a mistress who is in love with him and he "uses" her to try to get the heroine out of his system. The love/hate relationship between the hero and the heroine is very contrived and doesn't ring true.

I enjoy Nan Ryan's writing, although her style is more risque than other books in the genre. I felt the story, although well-started, ended flatly. She tends to focus too much on being explicit [and a bit kinky] in the love scenes, which are numerous in this book. I would not recommend this book for the story itself, but Nan's writing is lush and descriptive.

This is classic Nan Ryan. If you are a fan, you'll love this one. The love scenes are so HOT!
