Horrible!
I am a big fan of this story line, and it's been AGES since I got an update on the Babies, and Magic. But some people didn't help Laurel K with any editing. What do immortal men do all day? nothing?? Really?? occasionally train that's it?? There were so many many wasted pages of boring information about what people were wearing, what happened in the past, what happened in the past, and did I mention what happened in another book... What about this book?
Usually with the Anita Blake stories there is more violence descriptions than I can stomach, so I just do a little page skipping. This book, I was page skipping to try to find some story line of interest. If I'd been the editor I would have removed 80% of the book and asked for more character development. I'm so glad I didn't pay for the more expensive hardcover book, I bought the Kindle, and will never read this story again. It was not worth paying Kindle $11.00. So if you MUST read it, check it out of the library.

It seems that Hamilton is just riding on her past success lately. I couldn't wait to read this and was disappointed. It was extremely boring w/ maybe 4 action scenes and very little on the babies which is what I was excited to hear about. She summarized the defeat of a major enemy in the last chapter and wasted the whole book on everyday household matters and rambling conversations/thoughts @ love & mythology. Can't believe it took her years to return to Meredith and this is what we get. This should have been a novella, not 372 pages! So glad I got it at the library.
This is not a keeper for me. I read a library copy, and that's enough. I'm removing this from my Wish List.
I will read the next book(s) if only to find out what happens. But I found this a bit boring, other than how they got Mab to toe the line. Other than that, no real movement in the characters that was interesting.

I can't say that I love this series. I loved Laurell K. Hamilton's, Anita Blake series and so I was kind of hoping for a similar series. Alas this book is nothing like the Anita Blake series. I have read all the books and I can honestly say, If your the kind of person who likes women who are strong and do it your self kind of women then this book is not for you. I found that through out this book Meredith appears weak. As a Faerie Princess of the Dark Court her hand of power never came when she came of age, like everyone else, thus she was considered weak and unworthy.
Fortunate for her her hand of power comes to her when she needs it most. Unfortunately she never uses it when she should, instead she seems to forget she has it and only uses it a little to late and barely in the nick of time. She is constantly the hereon and she finds herself in need of rescuing more times then I can count.
Still with all the things I found wrong with the book I still found myself continuing the series and thus found myself falling in love with some of her characters. How can you not love the men in her life when you find out that even though they've lived for centuries as the Queen's Royal Guards they've been forced to be celibate for centuries, they've endured centuries of torture for the Queen's pleasure and they've been degraded to the point of loosing themselves. Meredith brings them back with love and understanding and truly loves them all in her own way. It's no wonder I found out that all my favorite characters were also the ones for many other's in my book club.
Still it broke my heart when I found out that one of the father's of Meredith's babies is killed in this series. I wont say who, but I will say that after so many books where Laurell K. Hamilton makes us fall in love with him, I almost cried with Meredith when he was killed. I wasn't the only one who felt like my heart was broken. I only hope that he's brought back like Frost was. I can't see myself forgetting him or moving on.
I hope that Hamilton's future books become more women empowering, but I know that like all author's they'll do what they feel is right and nothing we can say will change it.
The series is still worth reading. Just don't expect it to be like her Anita Blake books, because their far from being even closely similar.
