I absolutely adored this book. It is written in a style that remains engaging to an adult, while still credible as a child's point of view. It covers the Vietnam topic in a delicate manner that leaves a strong impression of the horrors that soldiers face, while not being graphic or foul. While it is completely readable by a child, I don't think it will have the gravity it exerts on an adult, especially one with children. Beautifully written and highly recommended!
Rereleased in 2010 with a new cover to make it "hot" once again, this is a novel, both timely and timeless, about the sacrifices we make for what we believe and the people we love.
Dealing with family in real-life combat and being 12 years old make this a coming of age story because Jamie is forced to grow up through seeing the truth. Very well done.
