Having never read a book from the Nina Reilly series before I was a bit apprehensive when I picked up this 12th book. But the writing team of OShaughnessy made it easy for me, this is really a prequel to the whole series. You meet Nina as a young 20-something mom of 4 year old Bob who is working as a paralegal by day and attending law school at night. But she is no superhero, she is just a woman trying to do what is best for her family.

When Ninas mother Ginny is disfigured by a rather shady acupuncturist Nina knows that someone should pay, and working in a law firm, she knows just who to call. But then things get even more complicated when ex-lover Richard Filsen appears and claims to be Bobs father, then Nina finds herself in the middle of a couple murder investigations and she suddenly finds her life in a tailspin.

Nina cant do this alone and with the help of some very interesting cohorts she is determined to do right by her son, and most importantly her mother; who has always been there for her and her brother. Who put her own pain and struggle on the back burner to give her children the best that she could; and in Ginnys last steps of independence - to leave them all with something- may have cost Nina more then she ever realized.

I really enjoyed this book and now look forward to going back to the beginning of this series to see where the lives of these characters lead. Nina is a solidly drawn character that I hope will entertain me for years to come.

I have read all the Nina Reilly series so I was really looking forward to this prequl. It did satisfy some of the curiousity about Nina's background, but I also think that some of the things that happened in this book would have had a bigger impact on Nina's life in the other books which supposedly took place later. Still, I would recommend this to anyone who has read the other books in the series.

Nina Riley in the beginning. Not as good as other books.

The authors are two sisters who have collaborated to write suspenseful thrillers. In this story, a struggling single mom juggles a paralegal job, night classes at law school, a very ill mother, an addicted brother and a threatening ex. The authors keep all these balls in the air, and the reader turning pages to see how it all comes out.

Working as a paralegal and attending law school at night, Nina Reilly has her hands full fighting for custody of her young son, Bob, and overseeing a medical malpractice lawsuit on behalf of her mother, who is suffering serious health complications from an acupuncture procedure. But when a woman plunges to her death near Big Sur and witnesses disappear, Nina suspects there is more to the "accident" than the authorities are saying. With the help of homicide cop Paul Van Wagoner, she rushes to uncover a killer in a case that hits painfully close to home. This novel is the story of the brilliant Nina Reilly's fascinating first murder investigation - the shattering case that ignites her passionate commitment to fighting for justice.

Nice to see the genesis of a few of the characters; Paul, her brother Matt, Klaus. Not the best legal thriller of the series, but I still enjoyed it.
