This is the first of a series of books about a new vicar. The stories are set in Granchester where Sidney Chambers begins his assignment of vicar. The period is the time of the beginning of Queen Elizabeth's tenure (1953) and the beginning of Chambers' tenure as vicar. Right off, the community is faced with a series of mysteries, none simple, and Chambers works to solve them. The community is hit with jewelry thefts, art forgery. and death of the daughter of jazz promoter's daughter.
Shadow of Death will keep you up at night reading and out hunting for the next book in the series. Just what is needed on one of these cold winter nights.

English mystery book; each chapter was another case. Some of the terms may be unfamiliar to American readers which made it interesting. Sidney Chambers is a priest who gets involved in solving the mysteries which involved murders or theft.

After watching the Grantchester series on PBS,I just had to have the book. So far they've televised the 1st series loosely based on the chapters in The Shadow of Death, just hope they continue with a 2nd season. The story line begins in the early 50's. The vicar is so easy on the eyes, and Robson Green is definitely appealing as a police inspector. I really enjoyed the author's writing, very descriptive and easy to read as in not a lot of verbage I usually skip.
