Excellent! "With his wife, Evie, scheduled for surgery the next morning, Dr. Harry Corbett goes to the hospital for what he hopes will be a quiet evening of reconciliation... only to find his wife shockingly, inexplicably dead. The police suspect homicide and their only suspect is Dr. Harry Corbett". Another wonderful Palmer story line.

Just before his 50th birthday, life begins to unravel for Dr. Harry Corbett of the Manhattan Medical Center. Not only is his beautiful and talented wife, Evie, scheduled for serious neurosurgery but Harry believes that he will die on his birthday like his father and grandfather. Nothing happens as the doctor fears. Instead, his wife is murdered, and, after confessing to an affair with her, Harry's archenemy, Casper Sidonis, accuses Harry of having killed her. The most dimwitted cop in recent fiction arrives on the scene and agrees with Sidonis. From this somewhat far-fetched beginning, Palmer (Natural Causes, LJ 2/1/94) creates a suspenseful, entirely credible tale of health insurance fraud and behind-the-scenes hospital politics.

This is a pretty good medical thriller. Dr. Harry Corbett's wife dies on the eve of brain surgery and as she is ready to leave him for another staff doctor. Ruled a homicide, Dr. Corbett finds himself not only the prime suspect but the only suspect. He must unravel the mystery behind the evil insurance comglomerate that is knocking off expensive patients. A good thriller, but Palmer, like most thriller writers, abandons suspense for an over-the-top, unbelievable action-packed climax. The ending was contrived but I still give the book a thumbs up.

Entertaining read ... BUT the story is too predictable, too many holes, too many coincidences, and feels a bit strained overall.

Dr Harry Corbett is accused by his wife's lover of killing her by poisoning her in the hospital the night before she was scheduled to undergo surgery. The only person who can testify on his behalf is a chronic drunk. Of course, nobody believes Harry so he tries to find the killer himself. He discovers that his journalist wife worked undercover for an escort service, and apparently came too close to the truth about a group of men comprising the mysterious and secret "roundtable". Harry finds out that these knights are executives from different medical insurance companies, who have devised their own methods to increase their companies' profits. Harry has to find out who their elusive killer-for-hire is while trying to stay alive himself.
