An odd children's historical fiction about three French children who discover a blind English soldier, starving and freezing, in the woods close by their home. He is a deserter from World War I, anxious to get get home to his dying brother, who had given him a small silver donkey for luck. The children steal food and clothes for him and eventually find someone willing to sail him across the Channel. In return, he tells them stories that are all about donkeys, starting with the donkey that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. The odd part is that, although he starts out across the English Channel, the story ends without one's knowing if he ever got there or returned to his home.
