This is a young adult book that is just like the movie with the same title. This was a very quick read (for me as I am an adult!), but I think it would be a great book for a teenager aged 12-15. It revolves around the lives of 4 teenagers as they spend their first summer away from each other. They share magical jeans, which they send to each other throughout the summer. These jeans fit them all and make them look fabulous, even though they are of all different body shapes and heights. These jeans also are with them as some wonderful and life-changing events happen. A note of caution: there are some sexual encounters in the book (not very explicit), so parents may want to consider that before letting their child read it.

I decided to read this series after catching a few minutes of the first movie on ABC Family. I decided not to watch the rest of the movie as I wanted to read the book series first. I had to say that I really did enjoy this relatively light story of friendship. It takes a few pages to get used to the constant jumping between characters, but that's also what keeps the pace of the story moving. Tibby's story and Lena's story are the two that interested me the most. All in all, I really enjoyed it as a nice, light, quick read! :-)

While I am well into adulthood, and this is a young adult book, I still enjoyed the story of the four girlfriends and their experiences with the shared, majical pants.

I can see where teenagers would like this but I found it disappointing. These girls aren't quite 16 and they lie about where they go, what they do, and fly off without their parents knowing a thing about it.
I would probably read the next in the series, though. It is a quick read.

As four best friends spend their first summer apart from one another, they share a magical pair of jeans. Despite being of various shapes and sizes, each one of them fits perfectly into the pants. To keep in touch they pass these pants to each other as well as the adventures they are going through while apart.
I have not seen the movie, and maybe I will later. This was a "feel good" book, which we all need once in awhile!
A particular pair of jeans fits all the "girlfriends" in just the right way....so when one gal finishes her "time" with the jeans, she forwards them to the next and so on and so on. It was just a very nice, light read! Enjoy

When I first got my hands on the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I felt like I was pushing myself just to pick it up. But as I got more and more into the book, it began to get predictable. Once Bailey's mother told Tibby her secret, I knew what was going to be the outcome of this. The same applied to Lena and Kotos, Carmen and her father (along with the 'surprise'), and Bridget with Eric. Overall, I thought it was a good book with many personalities.
This is a story of four friends who form a true sisterhood.

Overall an amazing book. I never thought I'd enjoy it because of the changing perspectives but it was just that good! Centered around friendship and the people who define who we are four friends head off for very separate summer adventures. They keep in touch through a shared pair of pants. An unmistakable bond binds them together which will be recognized instantly by anyone who has ever had those friends to whom you are so close its like your lives are one. Perfect for anyone who loves a good beach read filled to the brim with fabulous quotes to come back to for future reference. I cannot wait to read the other books!

This is basically chick lit for teenagers. The friendships are very important and while each girl goes through some harrowing, coming of age, experiences what each goes through is realistic.
One girl buys a pair of jeans â magically, although they are NOT of the same body type, the jeans fit all of them and look GREAT.
The jeans tie them together as they are separated for the first time in their lives during a summer vacation â they will turn 16 at the end of the summer. Each one gets the sense of the entire circle of friends being there for her as she wears the pants.
It becomes a sweet, semi-mystical experience for them. They grow up in the summer. There are other books in this series. I think I'll stop at one.
I saw the movie based on the book a few years ago, so many of my visual images were from the movie. One sub-plot was changed rather dramatically for the movie. I wonder why.
The book is sweet and a light read â it is meant for young teenagers.

"Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" is a story of four girls who are linked together by a special friendship. They go into a thrift shop and find a pair of jeans that Lena tries on. Then, the other three girls try the pants on. Even though they are different shapes and sizes, the pants fit them all perfectly. Because of their hidden "magic" the girls decide to share the pants over the summer, by sending them to each other in the mail, since they would be traveling different places over the summer

I liked it more than I thought I would.
great book.... loved it... good for most all ages
Pretty good story, it was a teen novel that still held my attention and interest. I loaned it to my teenaged SIL, and she loved it, too.
Too mature for tweens but good for older teens or adults. I didn't like it very much though, I felt just "ho hum" about it.
A great summer read! Very similar to the movie, but you get more insight on the characters. I found myself trying to figure out which one each of my friends in high school would have been. I am in my early twenites and it brought back great memories of when I was younger and saw my friends more frequently.
Good book. I'm hoping the next in the series is good, too.
Witty and well-written, there is something in this for all ages. One may think it's geared toward teenagers, but once you get reading it and start to sympathize with the characters, you realize it's something you can really relate to. I highly suggest it for anyone looking for a light-hearted read that will make you think and appreciate the ladies in your life.

As much as I try to not give in to reading non-literature books and such, I really enjoyed this book. Mainly because I think almost every girl can relate to these girls in some way. It's not a superficial girlfriend book. It talks about serious issues, and it's more realistic about their friendships than many somewhat similar books. Despite this, it is a fun read, and makes me want some magical jeans. Feel good book. You cry, laugh, etc. (Or at least get those feelings)
A lighthearted read
So many copies of this book is available that for a long time I avoided reading it until I realized that it won several awards. Now I am a great reader of recommended reading lists and award winning books. And, this one is indeed a very good choice for young women who are beginning to make independent decisions in their lives.
Briefly, four close friends find they will spend the summer apart after having spent summer after summer together. Their friendship and bonds help them cope with their mistakes, feelings and what happens beyond their control. The theme of the traveling pants strengthens their "safe" feelings and the friendship even though they are apart. Yes, it's like magic. A warm comforting read for the young and heart tingling for adults.

Adorable.
This was a really cute book and a fast read.
I enjoyed it, and it was definitely an easy read, but I am getting rather tired of this genre of women's fiction. It felt a little fragmented as it jumped from one character to the next. I never really felt like I knew any of the girls really well.
Really really cute story line!!!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from wherever they are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with her grandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja, California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herself in South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimum wage at Wallman's.
Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. (Ages 12 and older)

This is a touching, heartwarming story of four friends who spend their first summer apart. These girls stay together through a pair of magic traveling pants, which miraculously fit all of them. I loved loved loved reading this novel. It made me reminisce about reading Judy Blume's "Are You There God? It's Me Margaret." The four girls were so easy to fall in love with because their personalities and qualities are so similar to what I was like as a little girl. I recommend this for both girls and women, as both groups will get joy out of reading it. The movie is great, yes. But nothing compares to reading it.

The four friends, Lena, Tibby, Bridget, and Carmen are realistically portrayed. They each have their own adventures that reflect the challenges that their lives deliver to them, almost on a plate. I ordered the book for myself and read the whole series. I did not know they were young adult books, but that made them better not R rated. I ordered the book again to give to my 16 year old granddaughter. I am sure she will like them too.
This book is a great quick and entertaining read.
Very sweet book about the lives of 4 teenagers.
Fun, lively and perceptive. Better than the movie (as is usually the case).
Enjoyed this a lot. Nice quick read.
Mine has a locker poster on the back of the cover, I'm not sure if they all do.

Once there was a pair of pants. Just an ordinary pair of jeans. But these pants, the Traveling pants, went on to do great things. This is the story of the four friends , Lena, Tibby, Bridget and Carmen, who made it possible.
Fun to read this prequel to the Ya-YA Sisterhood!
